Fabrizio Romano issues exciting update on Viktor Gyokeres Arsenal deal
Viktor Gyokeres is set to undergo a medical with Arsenal in the next 24 hours. The 27-year-old striker is expected to join the Gunners’ pre-season squad in Singapore. The deal is believed to be worth €63.5 million (£55 million) upfront, plus €10 million (£8.7 million) in performance-based bonuses. Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta played a key role in negotiations with Sporting CP over the structure of the add-on package. The striker netted an incredible 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting. He will be unveiled as Arsenal’s marquee signing of the summer, pushing the club’s total transfer spending close to £200 million.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the breakthrough on Wednesday via social media platform X, stating: “Viktor Gyokeres, new Arsenal player as every document has now been approved and exchanged. Arsenal and Sporting completed the process with formal authorisation to travel, medical to start in next 24h. Gyökeres, coming soon.”
This confirmation follows Romano’s earlier report on July 23, which revealed that Arsenal and Sporting CP had reached a verbal agreement for the transfer, including a €10 million add-on package. The final deal is believed to be worth €63.5 million (£55 million) upfront, plus €10 million (£8.7 million) in performance-based bonuses, concluding weeks of complex negotiations.

Gyokeres, who netted an incredible 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting, had long been identified as Arsenal’s primary striker target. The Gunners were locked in talks with Sporting over the structure of the add-ons, with initial disagreements over the conditions tied to the bonus payments. However, a breakthrough was eventually reached, thanks in part to the influence of Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta.

The forward was reportedly determined to secure a move to the Emirates, going as far as skipping Sporting’s pre-season training sessions to push for the deal. His agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, played a key role in negotiations, reportedly lowering his commission, while Gyokeres himself agreed to a reduction in his salary demands to help facilitate the transfer.
Romano highlighted the player’s unwavering intent to join Arsenal, stating that the Swedish striker had “no intention to discuss other options” and was fully committed to Mikel Arteta’s project.
Gyokeres is expected to join Arsenal’s pre-season squad currently in Singapore, where he will link up with fellow new signings Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Noni Madueke. His arrival is set to address a long-standing need for a clinical No. 9 at the club, with fans hopeful that he can form a formidable attacking trio alongside Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard.
Once Gyokeres completes his medical, he will be unveiled as Arsenal’s marquee signing of the summer, pushing the club’s total transfer spending close to £200 million. His signing, alongside the imminent arrival of Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera, recently spotted in Singapore with Arsenal players, signals Arsenal’s intent to mount a serious Premier League title challenge in the 2025/26 season.

Winners and losers from Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal transfer including Mikel Arteta and £78m star
Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP. The Gunners had been working on a deal for the Swede for several weeks now. Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has come under enormous criticism for not signing a new striker over the last few years. Martin Odegaard is one of Arsenal’s best players on his day, but many of the chances he has created have gone to waste. Gabriel Jesus is not expected to be back until the final quarter of this year, and in what is bad news for him, he is unlikely to play too many games when he does return. Kai Havertz and Declan Rice will be ahead of Mikel Merino in the pecking order in that left-sided number eight role. Benjamin Sesko is the big loser now, as he could be stuck at Leipzig for another year.
The Gunners had been working on a deal for the Swede for several weeks now, and negotiations have been far from easy.
Arsenal were not happy with the way Sporting were dragging things on, but Andrea Berta has finally found a breakthrough to seal a deal.
Gyokeres is now set to complete the formalities before being announced as a new Arsenal player.
Winners from Viktor Gyokeres signing for Arsenal
Mikel Arteta
Mikel Arteta has come under enormous criticism from fans, pundits and the media over the last few years for not signing a new striker.
Some people made it seem like he voluntarily refused a new centre-forward, when in reality, it was the owners who failed him.
Now, finally, Arteta is about to get his man, and the hope is that Gyokeres will get Arsenal and their manager over the line in the Premier League.

Martin Odegaard
Martin Odegaard is one of Arsenal’s best players on his day.
The Norway international has produced several special performances in the famous red and white over the years, but many of the chances he has created have gone to waste.
Now, with a proven goalscorer in Viktor Gyokeres about to come in, we expect Odegaard’s assist tally to go up significantly in the upcoming season.

Andrea Berta
Andrea Berta deserves a lot of praise for getting the Gyokeres deal done.
The Italian has already done some great work in this window, but he was always going to be judged by the striker he was going to sign.
Bringing in someone who has scored 97 goals over the last two seasons should appease most fans, if not all of them.
Losers from Viktor Gyokeres signing for Arsenal
Benjamin Sesko
Benjamin Sesko was Arsenal’s preferred striker target this summer.
The Slovenia international has been on Arteta’s radar for over a year now, and for several weeks in this window, it seemed like he would be the one.
However, RB Leipzig demanded a fee in excess of £78 million for Sesko (TeamTalk), so Arsenal decided to focus their attention on Gyokeres instead.
Sesko is the big loser now, as he could be stuck at Leipzig for another year.

Mikel Merino
Mikel Merino did a very good job when he was deployed as a striker last season.
However, with Gyokeres coming in, the Spaniard will not get any more chances up top. Furthermore, Merino’s chances of game time in midfield will decrease too, as Kai Havertz and Declan Rice will be ahead of him in that left-sided number eight role.
We still expect Merino to stay at Arsenal this summer, but it will be a surprise if he starts more than a handful of games in the Premier League and Champions League.
Gabriel Jesus
Gabriel Jesus has been working very hard on returning from his injury at Arsenal.
The Brazilian is not expected to be back until the final quarter of this year, and in what is bad news for him, he is unlikely to play too many games when he does return.
That’s because Gyokeres, as well as Havertz, will be ahead of Jesus in the pecking order, and we won’t be surprised if Arteta prefers Merino over the former Manchester City man as well.
Jesus would’ve been transfer-listed if he weren’t injured right now. We expect him to leave in the January transfer window.

Arsenal needed Gyokeres
Arsenal were in desperate need of a quality attacker like him, and he could transform them going forward. Players like Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz failed to score goals consistently last season, and Arsenal needed a clinical finisher in order to win trophies.
They have not been able to win major trophies despite coming close in recent seasons. That final bit of quality in the attack could make all the difference for them next season. It will be interesting to see if the Swedish International can hit the ground running in the Premier League.
He has played for English clubs in the past, and he knows the demands of English football. It will be interesting to see if he can adapt quickly. There is no doubt that he is a top-class player and he has proven himself in Portugal and European competitions. However, the Premier League can be quite challenging.

Arsenal’s agreement with Sporting was reached earlier this week and signals the club’s continued intent to build a squad capable of challenging on all fronts in the 2025-26 season. With the transfer now entering its final stages, the plan is for Gyökeres to complete his medical while the team remains in Singapore, ensuring he can integrate into the group as soon as possible.
Clinical record speaks for itself
Gyökeres arrives off the back of a prolific two seasons with Sporting. He produced over 90 goals in that time and also contributed with assists and tireless pressing from the front, becoming one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe.
Gyokeres topped the goal charts in Portugal last season and finished ahead of several big names across the continent. What will resonate most with fans is his confident response when asked to compare himself to elite strikers such as Harry Kane, Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland. Gyökeres declared he belongs at the same table, stating his ambition to maintain top-level performances year after year.

Arsenal’s attack bolstered
Once confirmed, Gyökeres will join a strong group of Arsenal forwards, including Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and new recruit Noni Madueke, amongst others. His profile as a physical, goalscoring No.9 is expected to offer something different in Mikel Arteta’s tactical setup.
This signing follows a summer in which the Gunners have already added Martin Zubimendi, Christian Nørgaard, Noni Madueke, and Kepa Arrizabalaga, with Sporting Director Andrea Berta overseeing the business. The signing of Cristhian Mosquera is also expected to be announced soon by the club.
With the new season drawing closer, Arsenal fans will be eager to see their new striker in action, and possibly even during the Singapore leg of the tour.

Gyokeres transfer agreed after final details resolved
Arsenal have reached a full agreement with Sporting CP for striker Viktor Gyokeres, with the Sweden international expected to complete his medical this weekend. Gyokeres, who will take the iconic No 14 shirt at Arsenal, was determined to join Mikel Arteta’s side, reportedly ignoring late interest from other clubs and pushing for the move. According to the report, “the Swede’s agent also waived his commission to help the switch,” underlining the forward’s commitment to the deal.
Centre-forward priority addressed after title near-miss
After another near-miss in the Premier League, finishing ten points behind Liverpool and lacking firepower for much of the season, Arsenal have made a decisive move to fix their most pressing issue. With Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz both missing time through injury, the Gunners often lacked a focal point in attack.

Gyokeres, who scored 54 goals in 52 appearances for Sporting last season, brings precisely that. His blend of physicality, movement and relentless output made him one of Europe’s most in-demand forwards. The 27-year-old also helped Sporting secure back-to-back league titles and the Taca de Portugal.
Sporting journey caps remarkable rise
Gyokeres’ journey has not followed a conventional arc. After being allowed to leave Brighton for around £1 million in 2021, he found his feet at Coventry City before earning a £17 million move to Portugal. His rise from Championship forward to elite European striker has been swift, but not without grit.

He now signs a five-year deal with Arsenal, stepping into the most demanding phase of his career.
Squad overhaul continues under Berta
Gyokeres is the latest arrival in a busy window for new sporting director Andrea Berta. Arsenal have already added Zubimendi, Norgaard, Arrizabalaga, Madueke and Mosquera, aiming to sharpen depth across the pitch.
Our View – EPL Index Analysis
For Arsenal fans, this is the moment they have been waiting for. Not just because a striker has finally arrived, but because it is this striker. Viktor Gyokeres is not just another forward signing, he is a statement. A declaration that the club understands the need to evolve and contend, not just compete.
Gyokeres’ numbers are absurd. Over 50 goals in a single season, regardless of league, signals elite-level efficiency. But beyond the stats, it is his style that fits the Arteta blueprint. He presses from the front, works the channels, creates as well and finishes. He is a modern No 9, and finally gives Arsenal the central presence they lacked when it mattered most.
It matters too that he wanted this move. No games, no posturing, no auction. Just quiet determination. That is the kind of personality Arsenal fans will connect with, and his decision to wear the No 14 shirt will raise expectations further.
There are, of course, pressures. The fee is significant, and the Premier League is an entirely different landscape. But Gyokeres feels built for it, and Arsenal’s structure seems ready to support him.
