Arsenal have officially secured the signing of Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, with all documents approved and exchanged between the two clubs. The 27-year-old Swedish international is now set to undergo a medical within the next 24 hours, completing one of the most highly anticipated transfers of the summer window.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the breakthrough on Wednesday via social media platform X, stating: “Viktor Gyokeres, new Arsenal player as every document has now been approved and exchanged. Arsenal and Sporting completed the process with formal authorisation to travel, medical to start in next 24h. Gyökeres, coming soon.”

This confirmation follows Romano’s earlier report on July 23, which revealed that Arsenal and Sporting CP had reached a verbal agreement for the transfer, including a €10 million add-on package. The final deal is believed to be worth €63.5 million (£55 million) upfront, plus €10 million (£8.7 million) in performance-based bonuses, concluding weeks of complex negotiations.

Gyokeres, who netted an incredible 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting, had long been identified as Arsenal’s primary striker target. The Gunners were locked in talks with Sporting over the structure of the add-ons, with initial disagreements over the conditions tied to the bonus payments. However, a breakthrough was eventually reached, thanks in part to the influence of Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta.

The forward was reportedly determined to secure a move to the Emirates, going as far as skipping Sporting’s pre-season training sessions to push for the deal. His agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, played a key role in negotiations, reportedly lowering his commission, while Gyokeres himself agreed to a reduction in his salary demands to help facilitate the transfer.

Romano highlighted the player’s unwavering intent to join Arsenal, stating that the Swedish striker had “no intention to discuss other options” and was fully committed to Mikel Arteta’s project.

Gyokeres is expected to join Arsenal’s pre-season squad currently in Singapore, where he will link up with fellow new signings Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Noni Madueke. His arrival is set to address a long-standing need for a clinical No. 9 at the club, with fans hopeful that he can form a formidable attacking trio alongside Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard.

However, RB Leipzig demanded a fee in excess of £78 million for Sesko (TeamTalk), so Arsenal decided to focus their attention on Gyokeres instead.

Sesko is the big loser now, as he could be stuck at Leipzig for another year.

Mikel Merino

Mikel Merino did a very good job when he was deployed as a striker last season.

However, with Gyokeres coming in, the Spaniard will not get any more chances up top. Furthermore, Merino’s chances of game time in midfield will decrease too, as Kai Havertz and Declan Rice will be ahead of him in that left-sided number eight role.

We still expect Merino to stay at Arsenal this summer, but it will be a surprise if he starts more than a handful of games in the Premier League and Champions League.

Gabriel Jesus

Gabriel Jesus has been working very hard on returning from his injury at Arsenal.

The Brazilian is not expected to be back until the final quarter of this year, and in what is bad news for him, he is unlikely to play too many games when he does return.

That’s because Gyokeres, as well as Havertz, will be ahead of Jesus in the pecking order, and we won’t be surprised if Arteta prefers Merino over the former Manchester City man as well.

Jesus would’ve been transfer-listed if he weren’t injured right now. We expect him to leave in the January transfer window.

Arsenal needed Gyokeres

Arsenal were in desperate need of a quality attacker like him, and he could transform them going forward. Players like Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz failed to score goals consistently last season, and Arsenal needed a clinical finisher in order to win trophies.

They have not been able to win major trophies despite coming close in recent seasons. That final bit of quality in the attack could make all the difference for them next season. It will be interesting to see if the Swedish International can hit the ground running in the Premier League.

He has played for English clubs in the past, and he knows the demands of English football. It will be interesting to see if he can adapt quickly. There is no doubt that he is a top-class player and he has proven himself in Portugal and European competitions. However, the Premier League can be quite challenging.
