Three people are dead and a 32-year-old man is in custody following a shooting outside a Target store in North Austin on Monday afternoon. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis stated that officers responded to the Target at 8601 Research Blvd. around 2:15 p.m. Two were pronounced dead at the scene, and a third died later at a hospital. A fourth person sustained minor, unrelated injuries. The suspect, whose name has not been released, allegedly carjacked two vehicles before being apprehended by police in South Austin. Davis noted the suspect has a history of mental health issues. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and police have not yet identified the victims. The store’s parking lot was closed for the investigation, and the shooting is under investigation by the Austin Police Department and the Texas Rangers. The suspect, whose name has not been released, allegedly carjacked two vehicles before being apprehended by police in South Austin. Davis noted the suspect has a history of mental health issues.
“This was a sickening, cowardly act of gun violence,” said Austin Mayor Kirk Watson.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and police have not yet identified the victims. The store’s parking lot was closed for the investigation.
