MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – More environmental improvements are coming to Marquette.

The Superior Watershed Partnership is working on projects supported by $6 million in grant money.

The mile-long coastline restoration project along Lakeshore Boulevard in Marquette is nearly complete.

It’s one project that’s getting a boost from $6 million in grant funding.

“Over $2.5 million went to kind of create a living shoreline in Marquette,” Superior Watershed Partnership Special Projects Coordinator Kathleen Henry said. “Another example of grant funding was through the EGLE Charge Up Michigan grant program, which is installing two DC fast chargers in Marquette.”

The Superior Watershed Partnership team wrote eight successful state and federal grant proposals.

Beyond the shoreline project and EV charging station, money will support efforts to improve water quality, dredge the Upper Harbor and build the cultural community trailhead.

“Being creative and innovative with partners, including the city of Marquette,” Henry said. “On really designing this project to have that living shoreline component, so working with the water and not really against it.”

The Great Lakes Climate Corps was also a partner in making these grants possible.

“Our crews, after the heavy machinery’s gone, are going to be there planting native species, including beach grass to help with coastal resiliency to keep that sand in place, as well as native trees and shrubs and providing habitat for wildlife that is really critical on our shoreline,” Great Lakes Climate Corps Program Manager Tyler Penrod said.

Penrod says the Lakeshore Blvd project should be completed this fall.

That’s also when the charging stations at Presque Isle Park and Mattson Lower Harbor Park will be ready.
