This was a bold move by the Nuggets, but one that also opened up cap space for them to sign multiple players during free agency.

During free agency, the Nuggets reunited with former champion Bruce Brown and also added Tim Hardaway Jr. to upgrade their bench, which was an issue for them last season.

With these moves, Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz gave the Nuggets an A- free agency grade.

“Giving up an unprotected 2032 first-round pick is a huge risk for the Denver Nuggets yet was the price of doing business to save $17 million and swap Porter for Johnson,” Swartz wrote. “Getting Brown and Hardaway for the veteran minimums was a huge discount for players who likely could have gotten chunks of exceptions elsewhere.”

Swartz makes a great point about the risk of giving up a 2032 first-round pick in the Johnson trade due to Denver’s lack of draft capital.

Despite this, the trade allowed the Nuggets to free up space to sign both Brown and Hardaway Jr. along with allowing them to make a trade with the Sacramento Kings that saw them swap Dario Saric for Jonas Valanciunas.

The Denver Nuggets were not able to make the NBA Finals this season and have shaken up the team around center Nikola Jokic. The team has fired the general manager and coach while having some free agents plus now trading away a former NBA Champion to the Brooklyn Nets. Who was it and what does this mean for both the Denver Nuggets and the Brooklyn Nets going forward? Let’s take a deeper dive into all that we know about this deal.

Denver Nuggets Trade Away Michael Porter Jr.

The Denver Nuggets have made a move as the team has traded away power forward Michael Porter Jr. and their 2032 unprotected first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for power forward Cameron Johnson of the Brooklyn Nets, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. This move officially saves the Denver Nuggets $17 million and allows the team to officially be able to use their mid-level exception (MLE) to improve the roster. For the Nuggets, they will have Johnson for two seasons as he is in the third year of a four-year, $94.5 million contract.

For the Brooklyn Nets, this deal is a bit simpler. The team is able to eat contracts as the team with the most cap space this offseason and to add the final two seasons of Porter Jr’s five-year $179 million contract, they were able to also add the 2032 unprotected first-round pick. Depending on how the Denver Nuggets are able to build around Nikola Jokic and a loaded Western Conference, this gives Brooklyn another lottery ticket to either wait and get a young player like they did with their five first-round selections this year or use as a trade chip down the line.

This move is going to be interesting for both teams and it could shape how these teams play for the 2025 NBA season.

The Denver Nuggets have had a busy period of free agency, making some quality additions to their roster.

One of their first moves was to bring Cameron Johnson into the team by trading away Michael Porter Jr. to the Brooklyn Nets.

They then made a move to sign former Denver Nuggets player Bruce Brown to the team, followed by adding Jonas Valanciunas to the roster.

Valanciunas spent the second half of the season with the Sacramento Kings and averaged 8.7 points, while also grabbing seven rebounds.

He was expected to play second fiddle to Nikola Jokic in Denver, but it has been revealed that Valanciunas has opted to move to Greek side Panathinaikos.

With his exit imminent, the Nuggets will still have a $14.1 million mid-level exception and they could sign a championship center with that money.

Denver Nuggets could be in for the Al Horford sweepstakes

Al Horford is one of the most experienced players left in the market.

The 39-year-old was a key piece of the Boston Celtics team that won the championship in 2024 as he was valuable on both ends of the floor.

According to reports, Golden State Warriors were expected to be front runners to land Horford, with LA Lakers also in the race.

However, with Valanciunas now out of the Nuggets, they could definitely be in the race to sign Horford.

According to NBA reporter Evan Sidery, the 2023 champions could also offer him an important rotation role.

He tweeted: “With the Nuggets now once again without a backup center, they are widely expected to pivot to pursuing Al Horford in free agency.

“The Warriors and Lakers are the only teams currently in the Horford sweepstakes, but Denver would instantly offer him an important rotation role.”

Al Horford could be a great addition to the Nuggets roster

The Nuggets have been able to do a great job in free agency by adding depth to their roster.

Bringing in Horford would further elevate their free agency grade, as he is a quality center who can do a great job alongside Jokic.

The Nuggets have not been able to find a good deputy for Jokic in recent years, with players like DeAndre Jordan and Jeff Green filling in that role.

However, Horford is a better option than both of them as he can stretch the floor and also guard the opposing team’s best player.

Many Celtics players urged the team to bring back Horford next season, but they are having a summer of revamping their roster and are expected to see many more changes.

He is a great locker room presence and with a player like him, the Nuggets could take some load off Jokic’s shoulders as Horford could play valuable minutes when the three-time MVP goes to the bench.

The Golden State Warriors have been one of the most discussed franchises in this year’s NBA free agency period—but so far, they’ve remained relatively quiet. While speculation continues to swirl, the front office has yet to make a major splash. Their primary focus reportedly centers on adding a veteran presence to support Stephen Curry’s quest for another championship. However, the Denver Nuggets may now pose a significant obstacle in that pursuit.

Golden State’s offseason strategy has been highlighted by its reported interest in veteran center Al Horford. The 38-year-old remains one of the most respected names on the market and is viewed by many around the league as an ideal fit for the Warriors’ system. Yet, as the team evaluates its options, the Nuggets have emerged as serious contenders to land the former NBA champion.

According to Evan Dammarell of ClutchPoints, Denver could become a key player in the Horford sweepstakes should recently acquired center Jonas Valanciunas opts to play overseas. Valanciunas, who was traded to the Nuggets from the Sacramento Kings, is reportedly considering an offer to join Panathinaikos in Greece, a move that would leave a major gap in Denver’s frontcourt.

“The Denver Nuggets, meanwhile, were considered a potential threat if they lost newly acquired Jonas Valanciunas… if Valanciunas heads overseas, Golden State could still have competition to land the future Hall of Famer in Horford,” Dammarell reported.

This development could disrupt the Warriors’ internal planning. Addressing their frontcourt deficiencies has been a top priority, especially after a season in which the team struggled to maintain consistency in the paint. The addition of Horford, a five-time All-Star and key member of the 2024 Boston Celtics title run, would provide both stability and leadership on both ends of the floor.

Horford averaged 9.0 points and 6.2 rebounds per game last season while shooting an efficient 42.3% from the field and 36.3% from beyond the arc. His ability to stretch the floor and his high basketball IQ make him a seamless fit in Golden State’s ball-movement-heavy offense.

The departure of Kevon Looney to the New Orleans Pelicans in free agency has only magnified the Warriors’ need for a reliable big man. Looney’s exit leaves a major void in their frontcourt rotation, and Horford is seen as the perfect replacement thanks to his championship experience, veteran savvy, and strong two-way presence.

As the offseason continues, the Warriors must move swiftly if they hope to secure Horford’s services. With Denver lurking and other contenders potentially entering the mix, Golden State risks missing out on a player who could be pivotal in its bid to return to title contention.
