Major roads in Gurgaon were left congested after heavy showers that began at around 7 pm Wednesday led to waterlogging across the city in what residents said was an issue they faced during the first downpour every monsoon.

The district administration said the city received 133 mm of rainfall till 8 am on Thursday. Of this, 103 mm was received between 7.30 pm and 9 pm on Wednesday. This year, the monsoon arrived in Gurgaon on June 29.

The District Disaster Management Authority, through its chairperson Ajay Kumar, has issued an advisory requesting corporate offices and private institutions to allow employees to work from home on Thursday to prevent further traffic congestion.

The downpour did not spare posh areas like Golf Course Road, which saw knee-deep waterlogging and traffic snarls that lasted at least an hour along the Rapid Metro stretch. Roads outside prominent private hospitals like Medanta, Artemis and Fortis also saw similar waterlogging for hours. In parts of Sector 14 and Sushant Lok, the water entered ground-floor homes.

“I was stuck in traffic for more than two hours in Golf Course Road,” said Robin Sirohi, president of Sector 43 Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA).

Kusum Sharma, a member of Suncity RWA, said the residents of Millennium City were struggling without basics in place. “Skyscrapers keep rising, glass towers continue to be built, and expensive apartments get sold out, but basic infrastructure remains shockingly neglected. Every year, the same issues repeat like a cruel ritual, including waterlogging and sewage overflow after the first heavy rain,” she said.

As per updates shared by the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) on its X handle, its sanitation and engineering teams are reaching affected sites rapidly and working to clear the accumulated water, and clean clogged drains “on a war footing”.

The civic body added that teams are working diligently “for the convenience of the public”, including through the use of tractor-mounted pumps to drain out stormwater in heavily affected sectors. On Thursday morning, personnel were deployed to clear fallen trees.
