HMD has seemingly stopped selling its phones Stateside
According to reports, HMD has stopped selling mobile devices in the United States. The company, which redefined its mission after Nokia pulled out of the phone business last year, has cited tariffs as a key reason why. In South Africa, the company’s devices are still available to purchase, with PEP stores in particular being a popular channel to acquire one of its smartphones or feature phones. HMD remains focused on long-term growth, with strong momentum across our mainstream business and key segments such as Family, Secure, and Microfinancing,” it said in a statement to Wired. The news has cast some doubt on its operations down the line.
The company, which redefined its mission after Nokia pulled out of the phone business last year, has cited tariffs as a key reason why.
HMD no longer sells its own smartphones or Nokia-branded feature phones in the region.
It looks like HMD is making some strategic decisions, one of which is to no longer sell its devices in the United States, according to reports.
We have not spotted an official press release or statement on the matter, but we can still refer to Wired, as one of its journalists received a comment from an unnamed spokesperson seemingly confirming recent reports.
“Like many global businesses, HMD is navigating a challenging geopolitical and economic environment. After careful consideration, we have made the decision to scale back our US operations. Our priority is ensuring a seamless transition for our customers and partners. We will continue to honour all obligations, including warranty coverage and service for existing products, and provide full support through our global teams,” the comment explained.
“We deeply value the contributions of our US colleagues impacted by this change and are committed to supporting them during this transition. HMD remains focused on long-term growth, with strong momentum across our mainstream business and key segments such as Family, Secure, and Microfinancing,” it added.
As such, it appears as if the tariff issues surrounding the United States this year, and continued uncertainty, has forced HMD to reassess its operations in the region.
Moving forward, it does not look like any HMD smartphones will be sold in the US, with the same going for Nokia-branded feature phones.
What this means for other parts of the globe where HMD operates remains unclear for now. In South Africa, the company’s devices are still available to purchase, with PEP stores in particular being a popular channel to acquire one of its smartphones or feature phones.
When we spoke with company’s general manager for Southern Africa, Martiens Prinsloo, earlier this year, he emphasised the work that he and his team are doing in terms of making local consumers fall in love with the brand again.
“For us, the consumers are very close to our hearts, and that’s where the human mobile devices comes from. We want to make something that you love, but there has also been a big change in the world in terms of mobile phones. We are working on different aspects to make the phone what you want,” he told us.
“We’ll start with entry-level, and here I’m talking smart, but feature phone is still carrying on depending on what happens with the debate around 2G support. From a smartphone perspective, we want to start at entry-level, and then work our way up to the mid,” he added in terms of what devices were being brought into SA.
We will have to wait to see what the future of HMD holds, as this latest news has cast some doubt on its operations down the line.
