Alleged Assault Inside Boys’ Hostel Raises Campus Safety Concerns
According to police, the survivor was invited to the boys’ hostel under the pretext of a counselling session by the accused, with whom she was acquainted through social media and academic interactions. She consumed a drink laced with drugs, which caused her to lose consciousness.
Upon regaining awareness, she found that she had been sexually assaulted and was threatened with serious consequences if she spoke out. The accused was initially detained and later arrested following the FIR. Police are probing the security protocols that allowed the survivor access to the hostel without proper registration and are reviewing CCTV footage to uncover any prior misconduct.
Background: A Pattern of Campus Sexual Assaults Sparks Outrage
This incident comes barely two weeks after a 24-year-old law college student in Kolkata was gang-raped on campus, sparking widespread outrage and calls for improved safety measures in educational institutions. The IIM-C case has intensified scrutiny on campus security and the effectiveness of recent police guidelines issued to prevent such crimes.
Authorities are questioning the role of security personnel and the enforcement of visitor registration, as preliminary investigations reveal the survivor was not logged in at the main gate or hostel entry. The case has reignited debates on the urgent need for safer campus environments, especially for women.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
At The Logical Indian, we stand firmly against all forms of sexual violence and emphasise the critical need for educational institutions to create safe spaces where students can pursue their studies without fear.
This tragic incident underscores systemic failures in campus security and the urgent need for accountability, robust preventive measures, and survivor-centric support systems.
We advocate for transparent investigations, strict enforcement of safety protocols, and widespread awareness campaigns to foster a culture of respect and consent.
