Hollywood is known for sometimes outrageous health and beauty trends, and many of those trends end up spreading across the country.

One of the latest things attracting interest is something called “Biohacking.” But what exactly is that?

“Biohacking is a broad term that describes an approach an individual can take to improve their performance, their longevity, their appearance, or their general health,” said Dr. Martin Newman of the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Martin Newman is a plastic surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic.

He says some examples of biohacking include dietary changes, specific exercises, using fitness trackers to monitor progress, watching stress levels, taking supplements, and trying to optimize sleep.

While the concept is broad, it’s ultimately about making intentional changes to optimize our mind, body, and appearance.

Biohackers may use ancient practices like meditation or mindfulness, or high-tech tools that draw on the latest science.

But Newman cautions that a person can overdo it if they’re not careful, which is why he suggests consulting with a healthcare provider first.

“With biohacking, you can become obsessed, watching one’s weight meticulously, every ounce, counting calories down to the calorie. I think that any approach to improving one’s health, appearance, or performance should be done in moderation. With the guidance of a medical physician, a dietitian, a nutritionist, or a professional designed to keep you on the right track,” Newman said.

Newman says if you want to try biohacking, you don’t need to spend a lot of money on fancy products or technology.

You can start by talking to your doctor about the most beneficial change you can make in your diet or exercise routine.
