Brewers 6, Nationals 5: Thrilling walk-off hit caps memorable day at American Family Field
Brewers first baseman Andrew Vaughn extended his own franchise record by collecting an RBI in each of his first five games with a go-ahead, two-run double in the fourth inning. Brandon Woodruff, making his first start in front of the home crowd in 664 days after recovering from serious shoulder surgery, delivered a masterful 10-strikeout performance. The Brewers trailed, 5-3, entering the bottom of the ninth against Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan. But a ninth-inning comeback capped by Durbin’s third walk-off hit of the season made good on an emotional afternoon at American Family Field to deliver a 6-5 win over the Washington Nationals. Woodruff threw 81 pitches, allowing five hits and no walks. It was Woodruff’s sixth career double-digit game, and his 20th career 10+ strikeout game. He’s gotten eight Ks through four innings a whopping 10 times before. The ball left the bat at only 93 mph but-spinning its way over the right-field fence.
To cap what has been nothing short of one of the most memorable weeks of baseball for the Milwaukee Brewers in recent memory, a ninth-inning comeback capped by Durbin’s third walk-off hit of the season made good on an emotional afternoon at American Family Field to deliver a 6-5 win over the Washington Nationals.
Durbin was the hero. Vaughn, who’s legend has grown to unbelievable heights in merely five days along Lake Michigan, was the paladin.
But Woodruff, make no doubt about it, was the star of the show.

Before the ninth inning rally, Woodruff, making his first start in front of the home crowd in 664 days days after recovering from serious shoulder surgery, delivered a masterful 10-strikeout performance. He received a standing ovation on his way both and off the mound.
Yet the Brewers trailed, 5-3, entering the bottom of the ninth against Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan.
Vaughn delivered his biggest swing yet, which is saying something, with a two-run double to tie the game with nobody out, slicing a ball to the fence in right-center.
Pinch-runner Andruw Monasterio moved up to third on a heads-up base running play as Jake Bauers grounded out for the first out, then Durbin, with the infield in, smacked a walk-off single to right.
Nationals’ Brady House makes Brewers pay
House had yet to homer in the major leagues coming into the day in 85 career at-bats.
He crushed the Brewers for two big ones.
Having already hit a solo homer off Woodruff in the fourth, House delivered a clutch two-run, go-ahead blast off Abner Uribe in the top of the eighth. Uribe, who’s been so good this season, hung a 2-0 slider and House didn’t miss it, smacking it out at 102.5 mph.
Milwaukee’s offense, which had been silent since its three-run fourth, made some noise in the bottom half with consecutive one out singles, but a William Contreras 111-mph double play grounder put that threat away.
A CJ Abrams sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth extended the host’s deficit to a pair.
Andrew Vaughn does it again
It might be time to resurrect the Vaughn’s Valley sign.
Brewers first baseman Andrew Vaughn extended his own franchise record by collecting an RBI in each of his first five games with a go-ahead, two-run double in the fourth inning. Acquired for Aaron Civale after the right-hander requested a trade in June, Vaughn has eight runs driven in through five games with Milwaukee, including at least one RBI in each contest.
Another solo homer burns Woodruff, who’s racking up the Ks
Woodruff has tied his career-high for strikeouts through four innings, but a couple of damage swings have bit him.
Sandwiched between two of his nine strikeouts through the first four frames, Woodruff hung a first-pitch sweeper to Nationals third baseman Brady House, who roped it to the bleachers in left for a solo home run to put Washington ahead, 2-0.
Woodruff responded by fanning Daylen Lile, tying his outing on September 22, 2022 for the most strikeouts he’s ever had in four innings. He’s gotten eight Ks through four innings a whopping 10 times before.
The burly righty secured his 20th career 10+ strikeout game soon thereafter, getting Riley Adams swinging to open the fifth before a one-out single from No. 9 hitter Jacob Young prompted Pat Murphy out of the dugout to take the ball. Woodruff threw 81 pitches, allowing five hits and no walks.
It was Woodruff’s sixth career game with double-digit strikeouts and no walks issued.
Nationals jump on the board first
Daylen Lile flicked his wrists, and the ball flew just enough.
A two-out, two-strike homer by the Nationals rookie right fielder opened the scoring after Woodruff had struck out three of the first six batters of the game. The ball wasn’t particularly well-struck, leaving the bat at only 93 mph but back-spinning its way just over the right-field fence.
Woodruff followed by striking out Riley Adams, his fourth punch out through two innings.
