The black box of the Air India aircraft was found on the rooftop of the medical hostel into which the plane had crashed. Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Ahmedabad on Friday and took stock of the situation at the crash site. He also met those injured in the incident at the Ahmedabad civic hospital.
PM Modi also held a review meeting with top officials as India launched a formal investigation into Thursday’s plane crash, which was one of the worst air tragedies in recent times.
Both American and British investigation teams were deployed to support the India-led investigation. On the other hand, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has ramped up its emergency response, increasing the number of deployed teams at the crash site to seven. As of Friday morning, 81 bodies were recovered from the wreckage, said NDRF Inspector Vinay Kumar.
While the government so far hasn’t released official figures of casualties, Union home minister Amit Shah confirmed that only one of the 242 people on board – 230 passengers and 12 crew members – survived; Ahmedabad IG Vidhi Chaudhary said the toll stood at 260 people, suggesting that more people died when the jet ploughed into a medical staff hostel in a blazing fireball. Officials said at least 50 more students were injured in the hostel.
Eyewitnesses described a massive fireball and black smoke rising into the sky moments after the aircraft went down.
Amit Shah holds a review meeting
Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting in the wake of the deadly Air India plane crash in Gujarat and obtained detailed information regarding the entire incident.
In this meeting, Shah reviewed the rescue and relief operations and issued necessary instructions to the concerned officials. CM Bhupendrabhai Patel, Union Minister CR Patil, Union Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, and Union Minister of State (MoS) Muralidhar Mohol also joined the meeting.
Shah also said that from DNA sample collection for the deceased and their families, to identification, and the safe return of mortal remains to their respective homes, would be fully supported by the government.

Pilots’ Body Raises Concern Over Allegations Of Human Error After Air India Plane Crash Report
The Indian Commercial Pilots ‘ Association has raised its concerns over the accusations of pilot error after the June 12 Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. The ICPA issued an official statement calling the accusations and allegations against the pilots and flight crew a “gross violation” and “disservice to the profession” The 15-page report published by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) laid out the sequence of events for the ill-fated AI171 flight.

“In the aftermath of this incident, we are deeply disturbed by speculative narratives emerging in sections of the media and public discourse, particularly the reckless and unfounded insinuation of pilot suicide,” said ICPA.
“Let us be unequivocally clear: there is absolutely no basis for such a claim at this stage, and invoking such a serious allegation based on incomplete or preliminary information is not only irresponsible—it is deeply insensitive to the individuals and families involved,” the statement added.
It further said that any mention of pilot error or suicide “in the absence of verified evidence is a gross violation of ethical reporting and a disservice to the dignity of the profession.”
The 15-page report published by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) laid out the sequence of events for the ill-fated AI171 flight.
According to the report, the fuel to both engines was cut off shortly after takeoff. Based on the AAIB report, the fuel control switches were found in the “cutoff” position.
“At about 08:08:42 UTC (1:38 pm, 42 seconds) and immediately thereafter, the engine 1 and engine 2 fuel cutoff switches transitioned from RUN to CUTOFF position one after another with a time gap of 01 sec,” the report stated.
The London Gatwick-bound Boeing 787-8 aircraft crashed into a medical hostel complex just seconds after it left the runway from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Around 260 people, including 241 persons onboard the plane. A British national, Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, a passenger on the 11A seat of the aircraft, had a miraculous escape through the emergency door.

On December 17, 2018, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) No. NM-18-33, warning of a potential issue with the fuel control switch locking mechanism on Boeing aircraft.
The bulletin followed reports from operators of Boeing 737s that some fuel control switches had been installed with their locking features disengaged. While the issue was noted, the FAA did not classify it as a safety threat, and no Airworthiness Directive (AD) was issued.
The same fuel switch design, including the locking mechanism, is used in multiple Boeing models — including part number 4TL837-3D, which is installed on Air India’s Boeing 787-8 (VT-ANB).
According to Air India, the recommended inspections were not carried out, since the SAIB was advisory in nature and not mandatory. Maintenance records show that the throttle control module on VT-ANB was replaced in 2019 and 2023, but neither replacement was linked to any fuel control switch issue.
