A fire that broke out Sunday night at the Gabriel House, an assisted living facility in Fall River, claimed the lives of at least nine people. Here is a timeline of the tragedy, compiled from Globe staff reporting.

Flames and smoke had spread throughout the entire building, and multiple victims were hanging out of windows, screaming to first responders for help. Many victims were unable to self evacuate due to limited mobility.

EMS and police helped with evacuating people and treating those evacuated.

Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon said his teams confronted a chaotic scene on Oliver Street.

“When they pulled up, obviously our first priority is life safety,” Bacon said.

Mayor Paul Coogan is alerted to the fire and arrives at around 10 p.m.

Fire put out, residents taken to Timao Center and hospitals – 10 p.m. Sunday

Shortly after 10 p.m. the fire had been controlled and put out. Residents who were evacuated from the building were taken to Timao Center, a temporary shelter in Fall River.

Fire victims were sent to three hospitals: Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, and Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

Governor Maura Healey says “full investigation” is underway — 8:41 a.m. Monday

“I know the people of Fall River are strong and resilience, and now is the time for us to all come together to support one another through this terrible tragedy,” Healey said in a statement Monday morning.

9 fatalities and 30 injured in critical condition – 10:12 a.m. Monday

Mayor Coogan said there were 69 total residents at the facility at the time. At least nine died and 30 were in “very critical condition.” Five firefighters were also treated and released.

Healey speaks at Gabriel House – 11:04 a.m. Monday

Healey arrived at the Gabriel House at approximately 10:57 am. She was accompanied by Mayor Coogan, Fire Chief Jeffery Bacon, and other Fall River city officials.

“I just want to say to the families and friends of those who perished, I offer my condolences, deepest condolences and sympathy on behalf of the Commonwealth for this tragic loss,” Healey said. “We lost nine folks last night in this terrible tragedy and our hearts and our sympathies are with their families.

In a press conference, she said that they are working to rehouse the residents, who are a vulnerable population.

“These are people who are not able to move themselves, they were not mobile themselves, and therefore the work the fire and police and EMS did to get people out was truly amazing,” she said.

Bacon said the cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation.

“The largest challenge we had is that everyone needed some form of assistance,” he said.
