State celebrates 30 years of protecting environment with underground storage fund
State officials are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Underground Storage Indemnification Fund. USTIF helps clean up leaks from underground fuel tanks and protects the environment to prevent long-term problems.
It’s a program that helps clean up leaks from underground fuel tanks and protects the environment to prevent long-term problems.
Michael Humphreys, Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner, states:
Before USTIF, when an underground tank leaked, or threatened public health and safety by contaminating soil and drinking water, tank owners didn’t have the option or access to a resource that helped meet their financial responsibility to fix the leak in the tank. So USTIF was designed to address this issue.
To participate in the fund, business owners with underground tanks pay either a small fee based on the capacity of their tanks or a gallon fee on deliveries.
When a spill happens, these business owners can file a claim that covers up to $1.5 million to assist with the cleanup.
