PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Friday night brought something special in the night sky for many Arizonans. A SpaceX Falcon 9 launched from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in Southern California just before 9 p.m. and people all over the southwest saw the comet-like trail the rocket had.

Even though the sun set just after 7:30 p.m., the rocket’s exhaust plume was still illuminated in the night sky.

The rocket is carrying 24 Starlink satellites that will be placed in low-Earth orbit.

After the rocket splits off, the Falcon 9’s first stage is expected to land on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship in the Pacific Ocean.

Some people in Southern and central California may have heard one or more sonic booms during the launch, but nothing like that was heard in Arizona.

A similar launch that could be seen in Arizona happened about a month ago.
