Why is Oklahoma’s quality of life so low?
According to CNBC, Oklahoma’s 97/265 score — or a D- for those looking for a letter grade — stems from several of the state’s weaknesses.

While CNBC notes great strides in the state’s child care and air quality, much of the downfall stems from low scores in crime, health and reproductive rights.
The news outlet states that Oklahoma has limited protections against discrimination and one of the strictest abortion bans in the nation.
Additionally, when it comes to crime, the survey reports that the roughly 418 violent crime offenses per 100,000 people place Oklahoma at the 14th highest in the country.
“Of particular concern is a sharp rise in domestic violence homicides, which State Attorney General Gentner Drummond recently called an ‘epidemic,’” the article said.
While this places Oklahoma 42nd out of 50, thestate was ranked 47th in 2024.
