‘Bad for Anchorage, bad for business’: Bar staff react to weekend shooting in downtown Anchorage
A shooting outside the Gaslight Lounge left one man dead and three others injured. The man who died has been identified as 23-year-old Leroy Manogiamanu. Two of Gaslight’s security guards were shot during the gunfire. Some bar staff said they believed the gaslight should be shut down, citing frequent violence and previous shooting incidents. The Anchorage Police Department declined to provide further information, citing an active homicide investigation.

“I’ve been here for 44 years … We haven’t had any shootings,” Darwin Biwer, owner of Darwin’s Theory, said Tuesday.
His bar is just around the corner from the Gaslight, on G Street.
Biwer added that violent crime has contributed to a negative image of the downtown area.
“It’s really bad for our business,” he explained. “People don’t like coming downtown … these shootings are usually late at night and that’s when our business is good. So, we just need that kind of thing to stop.”
Off camera, some bar staff told Alaska’s News Source they believed the Gaslight should be shut down, citing frequent violence and previous shooting incidents.
Two of Gaslight’s security guards were shot during Sunday’s gunfire, according to the bar’s owner John Pattee. He said a third security guard retrieved a weapon from his car and shot the suspect.
“There’s a small group of criminals that are victimizing my clientele and my staff and my business,” Pattee explained. “In this particular instance … all of us feel like we’re as much of a victim as my two guys that got shot.”
Security footage from the Gaslight Lounge shows the shooter never entered the bar before Gaslight security staff confronted the gunman outside.
The Anchorage Police Department declined to provide further information, citing an active homicide investigation.
