Planned Parenthood’s largest affiliate in the country announced Thursday it closed five of its health centers in California due to a loss of federal funding. Planned Parenthood Mar Monte said it was “forced” to close the health centers following the passage of the Trump administration’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which prohibits Medicaid reimbursements to health care organizations that also provide abortion care. The locations closed include South San Francisco, San Mateo, Gilroy, Westside/Santa Cruz and Madera.”This law is clearly a back-door ban on abortion in reproductive freedom states,” a statement from Planned Parenthood Mar Monte said, in part. The loss of funding also forced the health care provider to wind down three of its services: family medicine, behavioral health and prenatal care.The health care provider noted that the closures impact thousands of patients, most with low incomes.Planned Parenthood Mar Monte also serves communities in the Sacramento region, including four locations within Sacramento, two locations in Stockton, and locations in Roseville, Manteca, Tracy, Modesto, Yuba City and Woodland. Most locations do not offer abortion care.KCRA 3 has reached out to Planned Parenthood to learn if other locations in California are impacted.On July 3, the nationwide organization announced it was taking the Trump administration to court over the provision “defunding” its health centers. This week, Planned Parenthood said a federal judge granted a partial preliminary injunction blocking the loss of funding. But that only applied to health centers that “cannot provide abortions because of state abortion bans, or who received less than $800,000 in Medicaid reimbursements in 2023,” a news release from Planned Parenthood states. As the battle continues in court, Planned Parenthood advised patients to keep their existing appointments.
