Ayat Mohammad was flung off a scooter as it was hit by a speeding BMW. Her father, uncle and maternal uncle were rushed to hospitals in critical condition. The body of Ayat, meanwhile, is still in the mortuary. The police said the rashly driven BMW rammed into the scooter, throwing all three passengers off the vehicle. Tanjeela and Gul had migrated to Noida from Bihar in search of work. They found a corner to call their own in the dusty, crammed Sadarpur’s Khajoor Colony, they also have an 8-year-old son. While she works as a domestic help, Gul is an electrician, and they have a son, 8, as well as a daughter, 5. “If I tell him, he will die a thousand deaths even if he is alive,” she says of her husband.
Her five-year-old daughter, Ayat, had died late Saturday, flung off a scooter as it was hit by a speeding BMW allegedly coming from the wrong in Sector 30. The two men accompanying her, her father Gul Mohammad, and maternal uncle Raja, were rushed to hospitals in critical condition. Raja, doctors say, is in a coma.
The body of Ayat, meanwhile, is still in the mortuary.

Around 11 pm on Saturday, when the family was ready to sleep, Ayat began crying in pain – a tiny insect had crawled into her ear. Her father, an electrician, and her uncle, a tailor who stayed with them, rushed her to the nearby Post Graduate Institute of Child Health.
They left on a scooter. The hospital was only a few kilometres away.

“She got her ears cleaned… But when they did not return, I called to check… No one picked up the calls,” says Tanjeela.
Around 1 am, her phone rang – the police were calling to inform that her daughter was no more and that her husband and brother are being rushed to a hospital in critical condition.

On Sunday, the extended family split into three groups – one at each hospital, and one at the mortuary.

While Gul is awake in the ICU of Kailash Hospital in Sector 27, Raja is yet to gain consciousness at Ghaziabad’s SMART Hospital. At the mortuary, relatives await the body to be released after postmortem examination.
“We are trying to be everywhere at once,” said Shamad Ali, a cousin. “Gul bhai is stable now, but Raja’s condition is still very serious.”
Tanjeela is inconsolable. “I could not find out anything from the doctors, or the police. I have not even seen my Babua till now. I had only one daughter,” she breaks down.

“Her father still doesn’t know that she is gone,” she adds, worried how she will break the news to Gul. “If I tell him, he will die a thousand deaths even if he is alive.”

Tanjeela is now worried how she will pay the hospital bills and if Raja needs to be shifted to a government hospital. “Raja and Gul Bhai used to take care of everything… rent, expenses… everything. Gul bhai loved the girl more than his life,” says Naheeda, a neighbour.
“Do bachche the… humse jitna paisa le lete, lekin meri bacchi ko kuch na karte (They could have taken all the money I had but not killed her),” Tanjeela murmurs, her voice cracking.
