Running has always been a huge part of Charles Locke’s life.
From his time in the military to the police force.
Two years ago, he was told he couldn’t run for the rest of his life and had to pivot to fit his active lifestyle.
“Two and a half years ago, I had to have a total knee replacement, and part of my rehab was to do indoor rowing. and since I couldn’t run for a year, that was a substitute for me,” Locke said.
He kept training and working hard. His friend suggested he should start competing after looking at his times.
“And so I did, I signed up for a couple of events, went to the world games in Winnipeg, Canada, and got two gold medals, two silvers, and one world record in the indoor rowing,” Locke said.
Even with all these achievements, running was still lingering.
All that changed on his one year post op appointment when his surgeon gave him the green light.
“When I had my knee surgery, we made the goal of wanting to get back to the Boston Marathon as the training goal. This is why I’m rehabbing. This is why I’m working hard. This is what I want to do,” he said.
With over 400 metals and counting, 50 plus marathons and 14 World and National records he’s still going at the age of 72.
“I’m not as fast as I used to be, but I still scare people when I’m out there,” Locke said.
Locke still gets up at 5:30 A.M. to train and is now a volunteer cross country coach for Kimberly Middle School and says its has been a learning curve.
