LOS ANGELES — Wednesday marked 60 years since Medicaid and Medicare programs began helping Americans across the country secure health insurance.

To date, approximately 70 million people rely on the program nationwide, 15 million of whom are in California.

The federally funded program was created to give health care access to low income individuals, seniors, children, pregnant women and those with disabilities.

President Donald Trump’s tax cut and spending bill includes a nearly trillion-dollar cut to the program expected over the next decade.

Health care leaders have voiced concern about not being able to fund certain services as a result of those cuts.

The White House says the cuts are aimed at reducing waste and fraud within the program.

Democrats argue the Medicaid and Medicare cuts in the bill will leave millions without the safety net and instead uses those dollars to make up for tax cuts to corporations.
