While Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott is touting historic reductions in violent crime, one Federal Hill business owner feels their neighborhood is being left behind.

Andy Wheeler, who owns “Locals Only” on Cross Street, said there’s still plenty of petty crime. That includes earlier this week, when Moo Moo Cow’s ice cream parlor was vandalized. Two people threw bricks and a large piece of concrete through the glass windows.

“Look at all the neighborhoods that weren’t issues three, four or five years ago,” Wheeler said. “They are now open-air drug markets and prime to crime.”

Wheeler added that open containers are a big problem and a reason crime continues, but said he sees officers “just walk up to a group of people and just say ‘Ya know I need you to put that away’, just to walk away and them pull it right back out.”

Last month, 62 vehicles were damaged in Federal Hill. A couple weeks later, a woman was hospitalized after being struck by a stray bullet in front of Nobles Bar and Grill.

Baltimore police said in an email there will be enforcement of low-level crimes, including open containers and marijuana smoking. They also told the Federal Hill Main Street Organization that 40 officers will be assigned this weekend between Fells Point, Federal Hill and the Inner Harbor.

“I’m barely hanging on right now,” Wheeler said.
