Former Stamford director of operations appointed to Board of Finance

Mark McGrath was appointed to the board after a unanimous vote of approval by the Stamford Board of Representatives during a meeting this month. McGrath, a retired colonel with the Rhode Island Air National Guard, oversaw the city’s operations under former Mayor David Martin. The Republican will take over for Dennis Mahoney, a fellow Republican who is moving out of the city. The new member of the finance board only figures to be in the position for a few months, as the seat formerly occupied by Mahoney is up for election this November.

STAMFORD — A former director of the city’s Office of Operations has joined the Board of Finance to take over for a departing member.

McGrath, a retired colonel with the Rhode Island Air National Guard, oversaw the city’s operations under former Mayor David Martin.

During an interview with the Board of Representatives’ Appointments Committee on July 30, McGrath touted his familiarity with city government.

“I know the processes, I know the people, the challenges, and I know how it works,” he said.

According to a 2018 Stamford Advocate article, McGrath previously worked as an engineer with Raytheon Co., where he helped design parts for RADAR, missiles, and electronic communications equipment. He also previously served as communications commander for the Air Force’s 444th Air Expeditionary Wing in southwest Asia.

The new member of the finance board only figures to be in the position for a few months, as the seat formerly occupied by Mahoney is up for election this November. McGrath is not one of the three candidates endorsed by the Republican Town Committee to run for the Board of Finance, meaning he will leave the board once new members are sworn in.

The Republican makeup of the board will be further shaken up by the departure of current member J.R. McMullen, who is not running for reelection. The board has two Republican members and four Democrats.

The lone Democrat incumbent this fall is board chair Richard Freedman. The Stamford Democratic City Committee endorsed Freedman and two other candidates, Kimberly Gustin and Chris Malloy.
