POTTSVILLE — Explore Schuylkill, formerly the Schuylkill County Visitors Bureau, is a 501 (c)6 organization whose mission is “to increase the number of visitors to Schuylkill County, assist in enhancing the image of Schuylkill County and support the development of new tourist attractions in Schuylkill County,” according to its online site at https://www.schuylkill.org/about-us.

Its funding is “almost exclusively by the county’s room tax.”

Community Day plans set in Mahanoy City

MAHANOY CITY — The annual Mahanoy City Community Day celebration will again include passenger train rides via Reading & Northern Railroad — in addition to music, food, vendors and entertainment — on Sept. 13.

Community Day is sponsored by the Mahanoy Area Chamber of Commerce.

“This year, the train will travel east through the Buck Mountain Tunnel through East Mahanoy Junction to Tamaqua yard,” event organizers said on the chamber’s Facebook page.

Trains will depart from 100 E. Vine St. at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. for the 70-minute round trips. Boardings will begin a half hour before departure times. Clean restrooms will be onboard.

Tickets are $22 for adults and $9 for children ages 3-12.

“Visit the heart of the Anthracite Coal Region and partake in Mahanoy City’s Community Day,” chamber officials said in an event flyer. They added the rides will depart “from the site of the former Philadelphia and Reading Railroad train station” and the highlight of the treks will be “a trip through the historic Mahanoy Tunnel.”

Diakon to sponsor 15th senior expo

POTTSVILLE — The 15th annual Senior Expo by Diakon Living and Learning After 50 is on the agenda for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 21 at Fairlane Village Mall, Route 61.

The expo, according to a release, is an opportunity for sponsors to “come in contact with thousands of today’s seniors looking for information on everything from retirement benefits to recreational opportunities, housing options to legal advice.”

SACRAMENTO — The Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce has announced the annual Farm to Table dinner event — “Fresh Off the Farm” — is set for 5:30 to 8 p.m. Sept. 23 at 1 Spud Lane, Sacramento.
