Schatz finds a short-term home at Big Game Motorsports

Ten-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion Donny Schatz parted ways with Tony Stewart Racing after nearly 18 years on Tuesday. Schatz will make his Big Game Motorsports debut tonight in Ogilvie, Minnesota, before making his way to Jackson on Saturday. The seven-race deal ends at Huset’s Speedway on Saturday and Sunday, August 30th and 31st.“We’re not looking any further than seven races here. We’ve got a really good team with David Gravel and the 2-car, so it’ll be just a fun seven races,” Big Game owner Tod Quiring said. “I have no idea (laugh) if he might quit after two races, I have no know (laugh),” Quiring added.

BRANDON, S.D. (KELO) — One of the most successful drivers in sprint car history has found a new home — at least for the short term — in Brandon, South Dakota.

Ten-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion Donny Schatz parted ways with Tony Stewart Racing after nearly 18 years on Tuesday. One of the first phone calls Schatz received following the split was from longtime friend Tod Quiring.

“I spoke with Donny on Tuesday evening and we just talked about life, we didn’t talk about racing too much, just talked about life,” Big Game Motorsports owner Tod Quiring said.

48 hours later, a deal between Schatz and Big Game Motorsports was all but done, much to the surprise of the owner.

“Donny said, ‘Tod, you don’t have to do this for me, you don’t have to put this team together’, and I said, ‘I don’t even know what you’re talking about’,” Quiring said.

A team, including Tod’s son, Taylor Quiring, handled the heavy lifting.

“‘Dad, all we’re asking you to do it sign off on this’, so I did and it’s all good,” Quiring said.

“Tod and these guys at Big Game Motorsports have given me an opportunity to take a car here and go race,” sprint car driver Donny Schatz said.

It’s a homecoming of sorts for the North Dakota native, who’s been racing at Huset’s Speedway since he was 15 years old.

“Growing up here on Sunday nights racing at Huset’s, a lot of races at Jackson, and even the new configuration at Jackson, so been a shame to miss all those events and very grateful for the opportunity,” Schatz said.

It’s a short-term deal, but perfect timing as the World of Outlaws will spend the next three weeks in the region, including Labor Day weekend at Huset’s.

“Really trying to just get through that and then see what the next step is because things go out west and really you can’t worry about going out there unless you do these things here, that’s really what my focus was and still is, and maybe that will change in a week or two where I’ve got to start looking a little further down the road,” Schatz said.

“We’re not looking any further than seven races here. We’ve got a really good team with David Gravel and the 2-car and that’s not going to be compromised by this, so it’ll be just a fun seven races here and it’ll be a good time the next three and a half weeks,” Quiring said.

Three weeks of Schatz in the black and orange #15.

“Donny might not like it. He might quit after two races, I have no idea (laugh),” Quiring said.

“They didn’t believe in us,” Central High School football players devastated after varsity team cut

Central High School’s varsity football season will be canceled two weeks before school begins. Athletes and their parents are now calling on the community to support and advocate for the upperclassmen. The team told Ozarks First this decision will not only impact varsity players but the Bulldog community as a whole, including cheerleaders, Kilties, the marching band, parents, and alumni. The teams scheduled to play Central will play at the junior varsity level this season and will open date in September. The petition started by Central’s varsity team has received 898 verified signatures within 21 hours of being posted on the school’s Facebook page, the petition says. The school’s athletic director told the team the season was canceled due to low numbers of upper classmen and safety concerns, though he said their team has about 10 more players this year compared to last season. The players’ parents are working on organizing a protest and have released a petition to get the team back.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Central High School announced Friday its varsity football season will be canceled two weeks before Missouri’s high school football season begins. Athletes and their parents are now calling on the community to support and advocate for the upperclassmen.

The team told Ozarks First this decision will not only impact varsity players but the Bulldog community as a whole, including cheerleaders, Kilties, the marching band, parents, and alumni.

“We were hurt,” said varsity player Julian Baker. “Our pride kind of just got stripped, you know, and I couldn’t really control my emotions that much, too.”

“It’s your own people doing it, not like a different school, it’s your school, your administrators. They took it away from you without even a choice,” said David Bitok, captain of the Central High School football team.

Going into his senior year, Bitok said the announcement felt like a punch in the gut after spending the last three months attending morning practice, working, and then going back to a second practice in the evening.

“I sacrificed so much for football just to get it taken away out of the blue, out of nowhere, and without warning,” Bitok said.

“They didn’t believe in us,” said Baker. “We’ve been working for months now, through November to the summer, just for them to take it from us three days before the school starts. This is really just hurtful.”

Baker said the announcement was devastating and sudden.

“If they wanted to take our season away from us, it could have happened maybe a month ago, two weeks ago. It did not have to happen three days before school,” Baker said.

Bitok and Baker had football practice at Harrison Stadium earlier today, only this time as junior varsity players. Central’s athletic director told the team the season was canceled due to low numbers of upperclassmen and safety concerns, though Baker said their team has about 10 more players this year compared to last season.

“We were preparing ourselves mentally, physically, and just like our pride,” Baker said.

“We’ve been training since November because we knew this was going to happen, all summer long because we knew this was going to happen. And again, they didn’t believe in us, and that’s your own school that didn’t believe in you,” Bitok said.

Bitok said it’s more than just a missed football season. For some players, football is the reason they come to school.

“Football was an escape for lots of people because, you know, Central is not in the best area. A lot of boys use this as an escape, you know, to get anger out or take a break from something,” Bitok said. “Even if we don’t always win, it’s still a high school experience.”

Bitok posted about the situation on Facebook, announcing that the players’ parents are working on organizing a protest and have released a petition to get the team back. He said parents and players from Marionville to Hillcrest, as well as Central alumni, have shown support.

“Even if we don’t have a varsity season, we’re going to keep fighting. We’re going to keep going, you know, because not only are we fighting for ourselves, for our pride, but we’re also fighting for our school. We’re fighting for the Bulldog community,” Bitok said.

The Bulldogs will play at the junior varsity level this season. The teams scheduled to play Central will have an open date.

As of this article, the petition started by Central’s varsity team has received 898 verified signatures within 21 hours.

Oliver has been open about past struggles

Oliver told The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch in 2021 that she has been dealing with debilitating, serious migraines, that can impact her performance.

“Well, I’ve had several [migraines] over the course of the football season,” Oliver told Richard Deitsch. “For example, I’ve gone from averaging 5-6 a month down to averaging 3 a month. I consider that being lucky. They’re very debilitating for me. They’ve been a problem for a very, very long time. It’s caused me to miss a few games over the span of my career because I just couldn’t take the noise and the light and the sickness that comes with that. The nausea and the vomiting.

“There was one game, about three-four years ago. I live in Atlanta. I was minutes from Mercedez-Benz [Stadium]. My driver, I said, you gotta pull over. We were less than five minutes from the stadium. I’m hurling. My head is pounding. And I made the decision right then and there, I’m no good to anyone. There’s no way that I felt like I was gonna get through that game, be productive, help the crew, contribute in any way. So, turned around and I went home. I felt so guilty about that for the longest time, but they really do knock me out of action.

“I feel like they’ve gotten better, just from the standpoint of having fewer. But they definitely are real. And they continue to plague me. And not to have people feel sorry for me, but that’s just the way it is. That’s just part of my health issue.”

Oliver remains determined to work

Oliver recently spoke to the Los Angeles Times about her commitment to the job, going over everything that she needs to do to get herself ready for the season.

BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO) — The SDSU football team saw plenty of change after last season, as head coach Jimmy Rogers and the entire staff left for Washington State. Now, the Jackrabbits have some new faces who are gearing up for the 2025 season.

Dan Jackson was hired as the 22nd head coach in program history on December 31, 2024.

“From day one, I remember him getting on the phone with me. He was real excited and he’s been attacking each day with us,” Joe Ollman said. “I can see improvement from not only him, but the entire team, the entire staff from day one.”

Jackson and SDSU then had eight months to put together a new coaching staff and a roster for the 2025 season.

“The first phase was really the build of the staff and the roster. That was our initial focus and then we got into spring ball and that was the fundamentals. I think we really checked the box with that, just teaching them base football,” Dan Jackson said. “After that, we really started focusing on leadership and what it meant to lead and what it meant to be a Jackrabbit as well and educating the guys there.”

The Jackrabbits put together a staff with some new faces and some old, bringing back offensive coordinator Eric Eidsness and defensive coordinator Brian Bergstrom.

“We have the best staff in the country and it’s because of the cohesion that they have together. The best staff isn’t about having the best X’s and O’s guy, it’s the combination of the group together,” Jackson said. “This staff will go down as one of the best to do it at South Dakota State. They love being around each other and it’s not like that everywhere.”

The mix of new faces and returning veterans make each practice valuable, as they gear up for their first game.

“The value of every rep right now is something that we’re focusing on. We can’t be out here wasting a play. I don’t which play it is that is going to help us win a game or win a championship, but it’s going to be one of these out here that we’re doing in fall camp.”

SDSU opens the season on August 30 against Sacramento State. We’ll have more with the Jacks leading up to their first game.
