Sony makes the “difficult decision” to raise PlayStation 5 prices in the US
Sony is raising the price of its PlayStation 5 consoles in the US. The price of the PS5 Digital Edition will increase from $450 to $500. The standard PS5 will go up from $500 to $550. The PS5 Pro will go from $700 to $750.
The price of the PS5 Digital Edition will increase from $450 to $500; the standard PS5 will increase from $500 to $550; and the PS5 Pro will increase from $700 to $750. If you’ve been on the fence about buying any of these, retailers like Target and Best Buy are still using the old prices as of this writing—for other console price hikes, retailers have sometimes bumped the prices up before the date announced by the manufacturer.
“Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment,” wrote Sony Global Marketing VP Isabelle Tomatis. “As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21.”
Sony says it’s not increasing prices for games or accessories and that this round of price increases only affects consoles sold in the US.
Sony was the last of the big three console makers to raise prices this year. Microsoft raised the prices for the Xbox Series S and X consoles in March. And Nintendo has gone through two rounds of price increases—one for Switch and Switch 2 accessories in April and another for more accessories and Switch 1 consoles earlier this month.
PlayStation 5 Price Increase Announced for the U.S.
Sony has announced that starting on August 21, the price of all PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. will go up. The price hikes likely have a lot to do with the tariffs recently put in place by the President of the United States. With the PlayStation 5 Pro now sitting at $749.99, that’s one of the highest console prices we’ve seen yet.
Here’s what the new pricing looks like:
PlayStation 5 – $549.99
PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99
PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99
No changes are being made to the price of accessories, and Sony also mentioned that, for now, no other regions will be affected.
Even though Sony didn’t outright say it, these price hikes likely have a lot to do with the tariffs recently put in place by the President of the United States. Those trade measures have already impacted plenty of other electronics, so it isn’t a stretch to see the PlayStation 5 being caught up in it as well. We expected this and said that this would happen a month ago.
This also makes PlayStation the last of the three major platforms to raise its prices. Microsoft already raised the cost of the Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo followed with the Switch, and now Sony has officially joined them. That means no matter which platform you play on, you’re paying more than you did before.
For players, it’s another reminder of how much the industry is being shaped by bigger economic factors outside of gaming. And with the PlayStation 5 Pro now sitting at $749.99, that’s one of the highest console prices we’ve seen yet.
So, if you’re planning on picking up a PlayStation 5, then today would be the best time to do so, before these price increases are put into effect.
At the very least, we can expect the Switch 2 to remain at the same price. Right?
Sony Is Raising The Price Of Every PlayStation 5 Model Tomorrow, August 21
The PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, and PS5 Pro are each increasing in price by $50. This news comes a few months after Sony said it was considering raising its prices in the US. Xbox announced its new handheld’s release date today, but won’t reveal its price.
According to a blog post from Sony Interactive Entertainment vice president of global marketing, Isabelle Tomatis, the change is due to “a challenging economic environment.” This brings the new prices for each device to the following:
PlayStation 5 – $549.99
PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99
PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99
As of today, prices remain unchanged in other countries, but many of them faced price hikes earlier this year. This news comes a few months after Sony said it was considering raising its prices in the US, but it might not affect consoles. That was, obviously, not the case. Other instances of companies increasing prices lately include Nintendo increasing Switch 2 accessory prices, and Xbox raising its console and game prices back in May. Across the board, it’s a rough time to be paying for new games and hardware.
Meanwhile, Xbox announced its new handheld’s release date today, but won’t reveal its price quite yet, citing “macro-economic conditions.”

The price points for PS5 accessories are not changing, Sony said, adding that the PS5 console price hikes apply only to the US market. Other markets saw PS5 console price hikes earlier this year.
Analyst Daniel Ahmad said Sony is raising prices against the backdrop of higher tariff rates on countries where the PS5 is produced, including China (30%), Japan (15%), Vietnam (20%), and Malaysia (19%).
Before this, Microsoft announced price hikes for its Xbox consoles. Nintendo, meanwhile, has said it cannot rule out raising the price of the Switch 2 due to tariffs. The company has already raised prices on a number of Switch 2 accessories.
On August 1, US President Donald Trump announced new tariffs that led to some market turmoil. This followed on from the initial “Liberation Day” tariffs that were announced back in April.
Sony is raising prices on the PS5 just after the company disclosed that the system has reached 80 million units sold worldwide. While Sony hasn’t spoken about a hardware successor yet, a few recent developments have given us a few clues on what we can expect from a potential PlayStation 6 console.
Sony hikes PlayStation 5 prices in US as tariff uncertainty weighs
All three PlayStation 5 consoles will see a similar price hike, with the most expensive PS5 Pro version expected to cost $749.99. Price changes come after U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs on imports from global manufacturing hubs such as China and Japan. Sony had raised prices of its consoles in various European markets in April.
All three PlayStation 5 consoles will see a similar price hike, with the most expensive PS5 Pro version expected to cost $749.99, the company said in a blog post on Wednesday.
The price changes come after U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs on imports from global manufacturing hubs such as China and Japan, leading to fears of supply chain disruptions and high material costs.
Sony had raised prices of its consoles in various European markets in April. Rival Xbox also hiked sticker prices of its consoles and accessories in the U.S., Europe, Australia and the UK a month later.
Consoles were expected to be a major driver of videogame market growth this year due to the launch of premium titles such as Take-Two Interactive’s “Grand Theft Auto VI” and Nintendo’s Switch 2.
But console price hikes and the delay of highly-anticipated “GTA VI” to next year have cast some doubt on the pace of growth in the industry.
On Wednesday, Sony said there are no price changes for other markets and prices of PlayStation 5 accessories remain unchanged.

To specifically breakdown each price increase, the base PS5 is increasing from $499.99 to $549.99, whilst the Digital Edition without a disk drive will rise from $449.99 to $499.99. Finally, the PS5 Pro will have an eye-watering price hike from the current $699.99 price tag to an enormous $749.99. These prices will come into effect on August 21, following similar rises in Europe, Australia and New Zealand earlier this year.
Despite the price increase to PS5 systems, Sony do specify that “the recommended retail prices for PlayStation 5 accessories remain unchanged”, and further reassure that there are also “no other price changes to announce for additional markets”. It’s a bold move for Sony to raise the price of a system when we’re already so deep into the console’s cycle, especially with the Nintendo Switch 2 having only just released at a considerably cheaper price tag. The economic impact of tariffs on the gaming industry is a developing situation, and we’ll be sure to follow it as closely as we can going forwards.
