Year-over-year bookings for trains between the capital of Madrid and the coastal city of Malaga grew 74.1 percent. The journey from the capital to the southern coastal city on the Mediterranean takes just under three hours. The second-most popular and fast-growing route was from Alicante to Madrid, which took just under 2.5 hours with one-way tickets starting just under $30. The route between Madrid and Seville came in third on the list with a 51.6 percent increase over the same time period. Other popular routes included trains between Budapest and Vienna and between Florence and Pisa.
But travelers in Spain are taking that to another level with the country boasting the most popular and fastest growing route on the continent, according to a study from travel booking platform Omio that was shared with Travel + Leisure. In fact, year-over-year bookings for trains between the capital of Madrid and the coastal city of Malaga grew 74.1 percent.
This increase made the trip “this summer’s must-travel rail route” where travelers have “the option to make this a jam-packed day trip, or you can extend it overnight to take in the sites and attractions at a more leisurely pace.”
The journey from the capital to the southern coastal city on the Mediterranean takes just under three hours, passing countryside olive groves and the Sierra Morena hills along the way. And with multiple trains running each day and one-way tickets starting as low as $20 in August (according to a T+L search on the country’s rail network of Renfe), it’s an easy and affordable way to swap Madrid’s open-air flea markets, palaces, and world-class museums for Malaga’s sun-drenched streets, historic plazas, and charming seaside dining.
The second-most popular and fast-growing route was from the coastal city of Alicante to Madrid. That route, which saw a 70.6 percent increase in year-over-year bookings, takes just under 2.5 hours with one-way tickets starting just under $30, according to a search on Renfe. The route between Madrid and Seville came in third on the list with a 51.6 percent increase over the same time period.
Overall, Omio noted Google searches for the term “Spain holiday” were up 31 percent over the past three months.
Beyond these, trains between Portugal’s Lisbon and Porto and between Spain’s Barcelona and Valencia rounded out the top five with year-over-year booking increases of 39.5 percent and 36.2 percent, respectively.
Other popular routes included trains between Budapest and Vienna and between Florence and Pisa.
Trains may not be as popular in the United States as they are in Europe, but there are still plenty of scenic routes to crisscross the country. Ride a train in the fall to take in gorgeous foliage or enjoy panoramic windows and luxury touches like gourmet meals and locally-sourced wine while looking out at dramatic canyon views on the Rocky Mountaineer. Trains in the U.S. are also getting upgrades with Amtrak set to debut its high-speed NextGen Acela trains later this month.
