Pope Leo XIV has an ancestry that traces back to the Creole and free people of color from Louisiana. Genealogist Alex DaPaul Lee discovered troves of documents in his collection. Leo’s great-great-grandmother Celeste Lemelle was the daughter of a free woman of color. The Lemelle family became one of the most prominent Creole families during the Antebellum period in Louisiana. the pope was born on Oct. 10, 1837, in New Orleans, and was listed as David Baquie, born in October 1837. He was the son of Cardinal Robert Prevost, who was previously known as Cardinal Robert. Prevost was the brother of Pope Leo XIV, and the father of the current pope, John Prevost. The pope is the first Catholic pope from the U.S. to be born in the 19th century and the first to be elected to the papal throne in the United States. He is also the first African-American pope in the Catholic Church, which was established in 1788.
