Letter: Ignore the pontificating of mega-rich celebrities

Colbert’s current net worth is around $75 million and he lives in a $3 million mansion in New Jersey. With what other luxuries does he spoil himself? Expensive clothes, food, and cars? Probably. Yet he lambastes Christians, of whom he himself claims to be (while constantly swearing on TV), for supposedly not helping the poor. The hypocrisy is astounding.

To the editor:

In 2010, Stephen Colbert said, “If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn’t help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are or we’ve got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don’t want to do it.”

Colbert’s current net worth is around $75 million and he lives in a $3 million mansion in New Jersey. He also owns a beach house in South Carolina. With what other luxuries does he spoil himself? Expensive clothes, food, and cars? Probably.

Yet he lambastes Christians, of whom he himself claims to be (while constantly swearing on TV), for supposedly not helping the poor. The hypocrisy is astounding. I suspect Colbert is much like the rich man whom Jesus told to sell all his possessions in order to help the less fortunate.

Jesus didn’t tell the rich Roman officials ruling Israel to help the poor. He told his followers to give of themselves and they did! The Bible describes several acts of charity among the early Christians. In Acts 2, 4, 9, and 11, and 2 Corinthians 8 we read about their acts of giving of themselves. We also have the examples of Zacchaeus in Luke 19 and the little boy with the bread and fish in John 6.

So, I’m sorry, but I will continue to ignore the pontificating of mega-rich celebrities and elected officials who misuse God’s word to try to shame me while they all live in the lap of luxury. They’re just people walking around with planks in their eyes while complaining about the speck in mine.
