Three days after the blockbuster trade that sent Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is speaking out. Prescott told reporters on Sunday that while he didn’t totally expect the Parsons trade to happen, he wasn’t completely shocked by what happened.

“I definitely didn’t think he was going to get traded. But just with the way their negotiations went down, obviously to some extent,” Prescott said, via The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “It seemed like it got personal on their ends, so that’s why I wasn’t surprised.”

Prescott implied that his understanding of the situation was based on the questions that he was being asked by reporters, rather than his own direct knowledge. But he also said that he was happy that the months-long tension between Parsons and owner Jerry Jones was resolved, one way or another.

“If nothing had been done, we’d sit here and y’all still would’ve been asking me whether he was playing in a couple days or when he was going to be playing. That would’ve been a lot more of a headache and distraction than getting a solution to it,” Prescott said, via the Dallas Morning News’ Joseph Hoyt.

As recently as last week, Prescott said that he had “confidence” that Jones and Parsons would agree to a deal, citing his own contentious contract negotiations. Prescott signed a four-year, $240 million extension with Dallas in 2024 on the same day the regular season began; he had spent the season before on a $31.4 million franchise tag when he and the Cowboys didn’t initially reach a deal after his rookie contract expired.

With the Parsons saga, Jones seemed unwilling to spend to the kind of money that the edge rusher wanted. Though Parsons had requested a trade, Jones initially said that he wouldn’t trade Parsons — until he did anyway.

Dallas received two first-round picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark in the trade; the team also extended standout cornerback DaRon Bland earlier on Sunday.

For what it’s worth, Prescott and Parsons appear to still be on good terms. Prescott told reporters he and Parsons exchanged messages after the trade.

“I wished him good luck,” he said.

The Cowboys will host the Packers in Week 4 on “Sunday Night Football” in a highly anticipated matchup.
