Reform party members were in a jubilant mood today, as the party’s Birmingham conference aligned with news of Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner’s departure from government.

Soon after Rayner announced she would be resigning after underpaying tax on a flat purchase in Hove, Reform party leader Nigel Farage sought to capture the moment by giving his headline speech three hours early.

After a rush for seats, the crowds at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre were urged by Farage to “be ready” for an early general election in 2027 – though one isn’t expected until 2029.

Watching on, our correspondent Nick Eardley describes how it’s hard to overstate the confidence at the Reform party’s conference.

We’ve got a full rundown of Farage’s performance and promises on stage – which had touches of Donald Trump’s campaign as the Clacton MP pledged to “make Britain great again”.

Today’s event is the first of the party conferences that take place in the autumn and Reform looked to drum up anticipation when it welcomed ex-Tory minister Nadine Dorries to its ranks last night.

Invited on stage by Farage, she told supporters in the hall that Reform is the “party of the moment” – and our reporter at the conference says a lot has changed for the party in a year.

We’re ending our live coverage here, but you can have a read of our news story for the full picture on Nigel Farage’s speech to the Reform party conference.

Reform UK ‘becoming mainstream’ as it rakes in support across Britain, breakthrough new poll reveals Nigel Farage’s party is ‘becoming increasingly mainstream’ as it attracts new support | Reform UK’s base is becoming increasingly mainstream as the party attracts new support, polls ahead of today’s conference show. New data from More In Common revealed that there was a narrowed gender gap, a more even distribution of support across age groups than Labour or the Conservatives has, and that many Reform supporters were broadly in line with average views on social issues. Luke Tryl, the polling firm’s director, said: “What jumps out from this research is how difficult it now is to pigeonhole Reform voters; as their support base has grown, their voters look more and more like the average Briton. “That brings with it challenges too; can Reform balance the more radical demands of its most engaged online supporters with its more cautious recent converts? “Can Reform maintain its disillusioned broad church with a focus on immigration, or does a coalition split right and left on key economic policy questions prove ultimately too unstable?” Some 86 per cent of Reform backers would support a reduction in net migration, compared with 58 per cent of the wider public. Since the last General Election, the poll found that the gender gap has narrowed from around 1.4 men for every woman voting Reform in 2024 – to roughly 1.2 men now.

Reform UK aims to ‘wipe floor’ with Labour in Midlands

Reform aims to ‘wipe floor’ with Labour in Midlands next year. Warwickshire County Council leader George Finch says he is confident Reform can take control of the region’s two biggest cities. A decent electoral showing would send a strong statement – especially to Labour, which currently controls the two local authorities. Success could also be sentimental for the party whose life began when it was launched in Coventry back in 2019 – originally as the Brexit Party. The party conference demonstrated the pulling power of the party, with thousands of people queuing hundreds of metres for over an hour to get into the NEC.

Reform UK aims to “wipe the floor” with the opposition ahead of all-out council elections in Coventry and Birmingham next year.

That was the message delivered by Warwickshire County Council leader George Finch as thousands travelled from across the country to the party’s annual conference at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham on Friday.

Here in the West Midlands, the party’s momentum appears to be building – having taken control of Staffordshire County Council and leading Warwickshire County Council.

But can Reform use its conference here as a launchpad to take its success in the shires to the region’s biggest cities?

Image source, Reuters Image caption, Reform UK chose to hold its annual conference at the NEC with Nigel Farage taking to the stage on both days.

Asked if, as a leader, Finch was confident of being able to demonstrate the party was capable of governing, he said: “We’re doing it already in Warwickshire; I cannot wait to see next year when the Coventry elections happen.

He added: “I think we can win the whole thing. We’ve got Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council elections next year; we’re going to wipe the floor with the lot.”

A decent electoral showing in the region’s two biggest cities would send a strong statement – especially to Labour, which currently controls the two local authorities.

But success could also be sentimental for the party whose life began when it was launched in Coventry back in 2019 – originally as the Brexit Party.

Image caption, Councillor Jackie Gardiner believes Reform can remove Labour from power at Coventry City Council.

Councillor Jackie Gardiner is the leader of the Reform Group on Coventry City Council.

Asked if she was confident the party could actually take control of a council where 39 of the 54 seats were currently held by Labour, she said: “Absolutely. Without a shadow of a doubt, it’s possible for us to win.”

She added: “We take nothing for granted; we have to work hard, and if the people of Coventry want the change, it is possible.”

The party conference demonstrated the pulling power of the party, with thousands of people queuing hundreds of metres for over an hour to get into the NEC.

But whether that momentum can be maintained will be key to the party’s success. Next year’s local elections will offer the best insight yet into whether the party has the staying power to govern at the highest level.

Turning to the drama engulfing Labour, Mr Farage claimed a civil war was set to erupt on the left.

He argued Marxist-inclined MPs will defy any bid by PM Sir Keir to form a centrist vision for Britain.

Instead, Mr Farage insisted, the left will implode into factions, paving the way for sectarian politicians obsessed with Palestine to rise.

He told the Reform faithful: “I think if there is one really big message from me to this conference, it is that before long, there will be Labour MPs that reckon they’ve got a better chance on the Jeremy Corbyn sectarian ticket.

“We have sectarian politics emerging. I loathe it. I loathe it.

“But there will come a point when many MPs think they’ve got a better chance of being re-elected under that ticket under Corbyn than they do under Sir Keir.”

We will stop what is a threat to our national security, what is a danger to girls and women on our streets Farage

Turning attention to ex-Labour No2 Ms Rayner, he added: “It was inevitable, wasn’t it? Really, you can’t be Housing Secretary and avoid £40,000 worth of stamp duty. It’s just as simple as that.”

Away from the turquoise-clad crowds, senior advisors to Mr Farage rejoiced at the Ashton-under-Lyne MP’s downfall.

They privately said that a Labour Party under the more charismatic former Deputy PM would have been a more challenging prospect than a fight against Sir Keir.

Zia: We’ll put Brits first REFORM will put British people first and end their treatment as “second-class citizens” in the country, Zia Yusuf has pledged. The party’s new Head of Policy said the rights of people with UK passports had been superseded. He said: “I see a Britain which puts British people first. This is no pipe dream. This is now truly on the cards.” He said he wanted to end an era “in which those who played by the rules their whole lives are robbed by the state to pay for those who break them”. In his speech at the conference, Mr Yusuf, already the party’s efficiency chief, added: “It’s time for us to stand up and write the next chapter in our great country’s story. “It’s time to put the needs, the hopes, the dreams of British people first.” He added that Reform will be ready if an early election is called. He said: “The era of British decline will soon be at an end.”

Reform went into its two-day conference in Britain’s second city with a ten-point poll lead through its stance on migration and crime..

In a move to look serious about winning No10, Mr Farage yesterday announced a new Department for Preparing for Government.

At one point, he broke off from his delivery to introduce former Conservative culture secretary Nadine Dorries, who defected to Reform on Thursday night.

When Nigel is Prime Minister, there will not be a judge in the country that will be able to prevent a single deportation flight from leaving Zia Yusuf

He also revealed that Zia Yusuf, who leads Reform’s waste-cutting Department of Government Efficiency, will take on the additional role of Head of Policy.

In his conference address, Mr Yusuf said: “We are on the brink of ending a tragic era in this country’s history, an era in which British people have been made second-class citizens in their own country.

“Our plan is the only appropriate response to a national security emergency. It will also immediately stop the boats from coming by sending a clear message — that being in our country illegally now has an iron-clad consequence, immediate removal.”

Mr Yusuf added: “When Nigel is Prime Minister, there will not be a judge in the country that will be able to prevent a single deportation flight from leaving.”

Also appearing on stage was Reform UK’s Greater Lincolnshire Mayor Dame Andrea Jenkyns.

She appeared in a blue sequinned jumpsuit and belted out her self-penned song Insomniac.

She said: “Are this awful Labour government giving you sleepless nights as well?”

On a local level, Reform’s Leader of Kent County Council, Linden Kemkaran, announced the authority would “undeclare a climate emergency” announced in 2019 to make £30million in net zero savings.

She said: “It no longer exists in Kent, and by undeclaring the climate emergency that means we can take out all the net zero commitments written into the constitution.”

Reform’s conference also was marked by MP defection announcements and the odd celebrity appearance.

Heavyweight boxer Derek Chisora was spotted wandering among the crowd, as was comedian Jim Davidson.

Swathes of former Tories also joined the event.

Responding to day one of the conference, Labour said: “Nigel Farage could have used his conference speech to offer more than just anger without answers and to say more than just ‘don’t know’ to the problems facing the country.

“He didn’t. It was the same old parade of complaints we’ve heard before. His answer to the charge that Reform is a one-man band was to unveil one of the faces of Tory failure from the last Tory Government, Nadine Dorries.”

The spokesman added: “Farage has proven again he’s incapable of acting in the best interests of Britain.”

Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride accused Reform of “peddling Jeremy Corbyn-style economics”, particularly over pledges to restore winter fuel payments and scrap the two-child benefit cap.

Mr Stride said: “Reform and Labour are two sides of the same coin, meaning higher taxes, higher borrowing and higher debt. No wonder there was no mention of debt or the deficit in Nigel Farage’s speech.”
