Century’s Avery Matt: Skating Towards Success at Holy Cross
BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – Century captain Avery Matt has always been passionate about hockey. From the tender age of six, she embarked on a journey that would define her life and career. Now, her dedication and hard work are leading her to play college hockey at Holy Cross.
A Relentless Pursuit of Excellence
“She’s one of those kids who’s almost at the rink as much as I am,” notes Patriots’ Head Coach Tim Meyer. Avery’s commitment transcends the ordinary player; her love for hockey is evident both on and off the ice. From early beginnings, Avery demonstrated a unique approach to the game.
“Every now and then it seems like she’s trying to carry the whole team on her back. When you tell her, ‘Hey, settle down, let the plays happen, use your teammates,’ she’ll instantly make those adjustments and you can see the payoff right away,” Meyer observes.
Formative Influences: The Curl Connection
Avery’s ambitions were shaped by her proximity to two former Century players — Britta Curl, who played for Wisconsin, and Brenna Curl, currently with Maine. Growing up across the street from these athletes left an indelible impression on Avery.
“I think living across the street from the Curl’s, being so close with Brenna, it’s kind of bound to happen,” Avery admits. The hours spent on ice with these role models inspired Avery to believe in her potential, showing her a pathway that might otherwise seem elusive for North Dakota kids.
“Just because not very many people do it, I think, that seeing that it’s possible by both Brenna and Britta just kind of helped me and gave me that confidence,” Avery reflects.
Committed to Holy Cross: The Next Chapter
Now, Avery is preparing to bring her skills to Holy Cross, a testament to her relentless work ethic and dedication. Her coaches have always admired her practice attitude and determination.
“I just always look forward to going to practice and being on the ice. I’ve never dreaded going to skate,” Avery shares. This enthusiasm and dedication are qualities every coach hopes to see in their players.
Tim Meyer commends her mental preparation, attributing her success to the unique habits she practices both on and off the rink:
“The kind of example she sets as far as like mental preparation, she’s obviously the type of player she is because of the things she is not doing at the rink. She’s doing the little things differently, and it’s paying off for her,” Meyer explains.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Avery Matt not only achieves personal milestones but also paves the way for the next generation of players. Her journey illustrates that with passion and perseverance, North Dakota athletes can reach significant heights in sports.
