Pope Francis funeral: A visual guide and timeline

Pope Francis’ funeral will take place at St Peter’s Basilica at 10:00 local time. At least 250,000 members of the public are expected to attend. 170 heads of state or government are on the guestlist. Prince William will represent King Charles III, continuing a precedent set in 2005 when the then-Prince of Wales attended Pope John Paul II’s funeral on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II. The service will end with prayers for Pope Francis and a final commendation – a concluding prayer where the Pope will be formally entrusted to God. After the service, Francis’s body will be transported to the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome for burial. He will become the first Pope since Leo XIII, who died in 1903, to be buried outside the Vatican. Last year, Pope Francis requested that he be buried in a simpler wooden coffin with a zinc interior. This is the coffin that will be seen in the funeral service. The funeral will be led by the dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re. You can follow the order of service in full here.

Italy’s most-wanted Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro arrested in Sicily

Italy’s most-wanted Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro arrested in Sicily. He was reportedly detained in a private clinic in Sicily’s capital, Palermo. He is alleged to be a boss of the notorious Cosa Nostra Mafia and he was tried and sentenced to life in jail in absentia in 2002 over numerous murders. More than 100 members of the armed forces were involved in his arrest. The Mafia boss also oversaw racketeering, illegal waste dumping, money-laundering and drug-trafficking for the powerful Cosa Nostra organised crime syndicate. His arrest will be an unexpected sign of hope that the Mafia can be eradicated even in the southern regions of the country, where the state is perceived as largely absent and ineffective. But questions are likely to arise over how the raid on the clinic came about and how it was possible for Messina Denaro to “run around Sicily, presumably for 30 years”, says criminology professor Anna Sergi. The arrest was “symbolic not just because he was the boss of Cosa. Nostra, but because he represents the last fugitive the state really wanted to get its hands on,” she says.
