DOGE cuts imperil AmeriCorps programs, volunteers in Michigan. What to know
AmeriCorps was created in 1993 by the Clinton administration to build on service programs created in the wake of the Great Depression. Michigan conservation and community service projects are among those nationwide losing grants and volunteer staff. The Department of Government Efficiency is overseen by billionaire Elon Musk, X owner and Tesla CEO and an adviser to Trump. The department has made cuts to numerous federal agencies and fired tens of thousands of federal employees since the beginning of Trump’s second term. The agency pays for members’ housing, meals and health benefits, and awards them for educational expenses at the end of the program. It estimates more than 1,000,000 Americans have served in the NCCC program across 36,000 locations across the U.S., USA TODAY reported. The organization invested nearly $31.7 million in federal funding in the state and brought in over $17.5 million in outside resources in Michigan, the agency said in a recent report. The cuts are leaving local organizations without the federal funding and volunteer support network they rely on.

‘Harmful and hurtful’: Trump administration cuts to AmeriCorps would impact Colorado students
AmeriCorps is a federal agency that aims to improve communities through service and volunteerism. Colorado joined a multistate lawsuit over the cuts that argues that the Trump administration’s “decision to dismantle Ameri corps flouts Congress’S creation” of the agency. The cuts hit 27 of Colorado’s 37 Americorps programs, Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera said. The work is continuing, buoyed by state funding as the court decides whether to block the cuts. But the funding won’t last forever, Primaversa said, “We’re turning over every rock to see if we can find some money. We don’t know how long we can keep this up.’“The sad thing is it really impacts the most vulnerable kids,” she said. “It just takes one adult to make a difference in a child’s life,’ said Brian Conly, the executive director of Parent Possible.

‘It’s devastating’: Michigan loses about $15M in federal AmeriCorps cuts
The cuts are a hodgepodge, impacting everything from the promotion of literacy in K-12 schools to tackling homelessness in the state of Michigan. Attorney General Dana Nessel has already filed suit alongside more than 20 other state attorneys general to contest the grant terminations. Without federal funding for the next school year, there would be a $2.8 million gap for the AmeriCorps program for the Michigan Education Corps. The Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) and Michigan State University coordinate a total of 65 college advisors and 20 more Ameri corps members who are stationed at community colleges and tribal colleges to help with college completion through the AdviseMI program. MCAN is scrambling to move funds around to keep advisors in schools through the end of May, but without a reversal of the funding cut, the college advising program that has been in existence since 2015 can’t operate next year. The organization is cumulatively losing more than $2 million through the cuts, the bulk of which supported the advisor program.

AmeriCorps cuts hit northern Michigan environmental work
AmeriCorps has cut more than $400 million in funding since the start of the year. The cuts have been felt in communities across the country. The White House did not respond to a request for comment on the cuts. The agency has reported that its environmental programs pay for themselves many times over, with high returns on investment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has not commented on the program’s funding cuts, but says it is looking into the matter and will make a decision in the near future. The federal government has not said what it plans to do about the cuts, which are expected to last until at least the end of next year, when the next round of cuts are due to be announced. The Obama administration has said it is working with Congress to find a way to keep the program going, but hasn’t said what that will look like or how it will be paid for. It’s unclear if the cuts will be permanent, but the White House says it’s working on it.

After DOGE gutted AmeriCorps, rural communities stand to lose education and preservation help
“I’m hoping that the members of this group will be the first to tell us how they feel about the changes in the world, and how they want to change it. I’m not sure if this is the beginning of the end or the beginning, but I’m hoping it’s the end of the beginning. This is the start of a new era for this group, as they will be able to change the way the world looks at the world. This group is the first in a long line of people who want to make a difference in the lives of people around the world by changing the way they see the world through their eyes. The group will have to decide whether or not to change their view of the world to make it a better place, or if they want it to be a more positive place to live in. They will also have to determine how they will change the world’s view of what the world is like, and what it means to them to be there.

Trump jobs purge hits Michigan. ‘Why did the president fire you, Mommy?’
The total number of federal employees terminated over the weekend is still being determined. About 3,400 Forest Service workers nationwide were let go, said Warner Vanderheuel, a fire battalion chief in Oscoda. The firings are the latest escalation in the Trump administration’s aggressive effort to slash the federal workforce. The push is being led by tech billionaire Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), but the Justice Department claims in court the firings were carried out by political appointees. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced plans to cut 5,200 employees across its agencies on Friday, despite it being the middle of the tax season. The VA is scrambling to save more than $98 million per year and will redirect those personnel back toward health care, benefits and services, the department said in a news release in Ann Arbor, Michigan.“They weren’t getting rid of the ‘deep state,’” Vander heuel said. “They were getting ridof people who just graduated college and, finally, have a good job”

The American Climate Corps fades away
American Climate Corps is part of the first class of the American Climate Corps initiative. The initiative was started by President Joe Biden to get young people working in jobs. It also appears to be the Climate Corps’ last class, as the Biden administration has quietly been winding down the program. When Trump takes over, any federal program with “climate” in the name will likely have a target on it. It was actually a loose network of mostly preexisting positions across a slew of nonprofits, state and local governments, and federal agencies, with many different sources of funding. It’s officially over. “The people who were responsible for coordinating it have left office or are leaving office. Before they go, they are shutting it all down,” said Dana Fisher, a professor at American University who has been researching climate service projects for AmeriCorps. ‘There isn’t really any meat on those bones,’ said Robert Godfried, the program manager for the recently launched Maryland Climate Corps.

The American Climate Corps is over. What even was it?
The American Climate Corps was created by President Joe Biden. The corps was supposed to create jobs and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Obama administration has quietly been winding down the program ahead of Trump’s inauguration. But the Climate Corps’ thousands of members across the country will keep their jobs, at least for the time being. The jobs will survive, even if the branding doesn’t, an expert says, because of funding cuts that will hit climate jobs hard under the new administration. The Climate Corps has $15 million in funding from the U.S. Forest Service that should last it five years, according to the director of AmeriCorps NCCC, Ken Goodson, aka DOGE, aka Department of Government Efficiency, aka Donald Trump’s co-lead of Government efficiency, aka OGE, aka Elon Musk, aka CEO of Tesla, aka SpaceX, aka Boring Co-founder and COO of Boring Company, aka The Boring Corporation, aka “Boring Company”
