Ali Khan Mahmudabad was arrested by Haryana Police after two separate First Information Reports were registered against him at Sonipat’s Rai Police Station. He was remanded to two days’ police custody in one of the two cases. He will be again produced before the court on Tuesday (May 20, 2025) The Faculty Association of Ashoka University strongly condemned the arrest on “groundless and untenable charges” Mr. Khan had defended the comments, saying he had “exercised his fundamental right to freedom of thought and speech in order to promote peace and harmony and applaud the Indian armed forces for their resolute action” He had alleged that “this is a new form of censorship and harassment, which invents issues where there are none” and that his posts were “misread’ and ‘misunderstood’ The police had sought his remand to recover his laptop from Lucknow.
