Muhammad Yunus aims to position Bangladesh as China’s gateway to South Asia by emphasizing its strategic role. This shift in foreign policy may strain Bangladesh’s relations with India, especially with issues like the persecution of Hindu minorities and Hasina’s extradition request, while strengthening ties with Beijing. Yunus suggested that since India’s northeastern states are landlocked, Bangladesh is the only ‘guardian of the ocean for this region’ and ‘could be an extension of the Chinese economy’ India fears that this would lead to the circumvention of Chinese goods into Indian markets. For India, it’s going to be a difficult period ahead. It is yet to be seen if China walks the talk on many promises. China has emerged as a natural alternative for Dhaka. For Beijing, Bangladesh remains crucial to its strategic imagination and presence in Bay of Bengal. For Dhaka, China is a significant partner in development, trade, defence and economics. Some of these arrangements, especially in defence and maritime cooperation, are seen as red lines by Delhi.

Chief Advisor to Bangladesh’s interim government Muhammad Yunus is expected to visit China on March 26. Yunus likely to attend the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference in Hainan province and later travel to Beijing to hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. As the new dispensation in Dhaka eyes deeper ties with Beijing, New Delhi has chosen to embrace strategic caution and patience. The India-Bangladesh relationship is mired in challenges including Sheikh Hasina’S refuge in India, alleged atrocities on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, refugee influx, and reported cross-border drug trafficking. The flurry of engagements signals India’s willingness to work with the new leadership in Bangladesh. However, India must draw lessons from the past and engage with not only the ruling dispensation but other political factions in Bangladesh including other factions of the ruling party and other political parties in the country. It is also important to keep in mind that Bangladesh is India’s largest trade partner in South Asia, are some of the reasons behind New Delhi’s strategic caution.

The caretaker administration in Dhaka got off to a bad start with New Delhi last year, primarily over its handling of attacks on Bangladesh’s minorities. For Dhaka, former premier Sheikh Hasina’s presence in India, and her recent political activities, have become a cause of concern. The interim government would do well to show greater sensitivity to New Delhi’s concerns and red lines, especially if it is keen to pave the way for a meeting between Yunus and PM Narendra Modi.
