Healing concert aims to break mental health stigmas in Hmong community
Project Ntsuag Siab aims to break the stigma around mental health in the Hmong community. The younger generation faces higher rates of suicide. The concert showcases music, art, and messages of hope, all while creating a network of support.
It’s called Project Ntsuag Siab, meaning “orphaned heart”, and the event aims to break the stigma around mental health in the Hmong community.
For many, talking about feelings isn’t something that’s been openly discussed, but organizers say that is beginning to change, especially as the younger generation faces higher rates of suicide.
The concert showcases music, art, and messages of hope, all while creating a network of support for families who often face language and cultural barriers.
“In reality, everybody has to have a mental health check-in and support each other to really open that discussion, and through this project, it allows us to talk about mental health and suicide prevention where you don’t have that stigma attached to it,” says Long Vue, the executive director of NEW Hmong.
Organizers say it’s just the beginning of a community-wide conversation that comes during suicide awareness month.
