🎾GAME OF THE DAY
The East Greenwich boys tennis team knows what it takes to win a title and in Tuesday’s Division I quarterfinal, it proved it.
Playing shorthanded against a Lincoln team that picked up a big late-season addition, the Avengers relied on a familiar face and depth to get the job done. David Levy pulled out a big win at No. 3 singles and the doubles swept, with the No. 3 team of Arya Gaind and Kevin Hayes pulling out a straight-sets victory for a dramatic 4-3 win.
East Greenwich was without the services of No. 3 Aristo Liu and with Lincoln having Om Seth — a first-team All-Stater — back in the lineup at No. 2, it was apparent this wasn’t going to look like most matches between a No. 2 and No. 7 seed.

The Avengers’ doubles depth rose to the occasion. Duncan Kling and Rajeev Sen pulled out a 6-2, 6-3 win over Logan Brouillard and Logan Brown for the first point and the No. 2 team of Kevin Chen and Aaron Garrian grabbed a 6-4, 6-3 win over Andrew Alves and Andrew Picozzi to make it 2-0 in a hurry.
Lincoln’s newfound singles depth shone through. Nick Ganim earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Ravi Vishnu — normally a doubles player — at No. 4 singles and Brayden Lynch pulled out a brilliant three-set win over Tate Coker-Dodman in a matchup of the two best freshmen in Rhode Island.
Levy, who won the clinching point in last year’s D-II final, stepped up at No. 3 and pulled out a 7-5, 6-2 win over Nick Emery to make it 3-2. Hayes and Gaind were in prime position to finish off the match and after Om won his three-set battle with Henry Seeley, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, bodies quickly flowed to where third doubles was playing.
Soon after, Hayes and Gaind put the finishing touches on their 6-0, 6-3 win over Brody Mendonca and Dylan Embrey to keep EG’s season going.
The Avengers move on to next week’s semifinal round and will host the winner of Thursday’s match between No. 3 La Salle and No. 6 South Kingstown.
🎾BOYS TENNIS – Division I quarterfinals
No. 1 Barrington 4, No. 8 North Kingstown 0
The defending state champs got their postseason started off on the right foot as every player who stepped on the court for the Eagles dominated in a 4-0 sweep of the Skippers.
Barrington wasted little time in dispatching North Kingstown. No. 1 Luke Sapolsky and No. 2 Bryce Kupperman lost four total games in their matches and the No. 1 doubles team of Henry Birbiglia and Merritt Birbiglia dropped three. Carlo Flores and Jason Lu were also clean with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 2 and while the team match was officially over, the teams continued to play with Gabe Anderson getting a win at No. 3 singles and Wrigley Crocker and Ian Davis getting a win at No. 3 doubles.
Barrington moves on to next week’s semifinal and will host No. 5 Moses Brown.
No. 5 Moses Brown 4, No. 4 Hendricken 2
The Quakers won three of the four singles matches and the No. 2 doubles team of Dylan Armstrong and Sai Kantheti grinded out their match to earn the clinching point in a 4-2 win over the Hawks.
Doubles earned the clinching point for Moses Brown, but singles won the match. The Quakers’ first point came at No. 4 when Axel Lundin walked off a 6-1, 6-1 winner. Hendricken quickly evened the score when Patrick Cavanagh and Shane Ciunci won their match at No. 1 doubles, but Quaker wins at No. 3 by Alex Hopkins and No. 2 by Joseph Willimann had the team on the cusp of victory.
Hendricken’s Luca Testa kept the team’s chances alive with his straight sets win at No. 1, but the hopes were dashed soon after. Armstrong and Kantheti were in a ferocious battle with Hendricken’s Jake McNeil and Inesh Rai at No. 2 doubles, coming up with some big wins in the 6-4 win in the first set before riding that momentum to a 6-3 win in the second.
The Quakers move on to next week’s semifinal and will travel to Barrington to face the top-seeded Eagles.
🎾Boys Tennis – Division II Quarterfinals
No. 6 East Providence 4, No. 3 Classical 2
After struggling in the second set, Kiril Burkovskyi bounced back just in time and closed out a three-set win at No. 2 to give the Townies a 4-2 upset win over the Purple.
Singles play was huge in East Providence pulling off the upset over Classical. John Vaughn took down Nate Johnson, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 and Malachi Smith came up with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Peter Breen at No. 4. Classical grabbed wins at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles, but a 6-4, 6-2 win by East Providence’s No. 3 doubles team of James Lynch and Ryan Mottur took down Alexander Sucuqui and James Zheng, 6-4, 6-2, putting the Townies one win from the upset.
After the first set, it looked like Burkovskyi was going to have little issue earning a point, but Becket DeShaw turned the tables quickly in the second set. The two battled tough in the third, but Burkovskyi was able to grind out a few big points to pull out the 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 win to keep East Providence’s season going.
The Townies will hit the road and travel to take on No. 2 Narragansett.
🎾Boys Tennis – Division III Quarterfinals
No. 3 Warwick 4, No. 6 Coventry 0
The Militia took care of business and the only drama was if No. 1 singles or No. 1 doubles was going to be the clinching point in the 4-0 win over the Oakers.
Warwick – a co-op of Toll Gate and Pilgrim – wasted little time in ensuring there’d be no upset. John Maynard dropped three games in his win at No. 4 to earn the first point and 13 minutes later, Parker Weldy finished off his match at No. 2, 6-2, 6-3. Josh Maynard came up with the third point with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win at No. 3.
The No. 1 doubles team of Etienne Degos and Jacob Scott were on the verge of clinching the match, but No. 1 Cornelius Zmed beat them to the punch with the finishing touches on his 6-3, 6-4 win.
Warwick moves on to next week’s semifinals and will play the winner of Wednesday’s match between No. 2 Cranston East and No. 7 Burrillville.

⚾BASEBALL – Division I
Cumberland 1, Pilgrim 0
Pitching dominated the game but Andrew Nocera ended it, hitting a two-out solo home run for the game’s lone score as the Clippers beat the Patriots, 1-0.
Cumberland’s Marcus Gomes and Pilgrim’s Nolan Canestrari went back-and-forth exchanging zeroes for five innings. Ben Jahnz relieved Gomes in the sixth and pitching duel continued and, after Canestrari got two quick outs to start the bottom of the seventh, extra innings seemed inevitable.
Nocera changed it in a hurry. With darkness creeping over Tucker Field, Nocera swung at the first pitch he saw and hammered it over the right field fence to give the Clippers the walk-off win.
Gomes didn’t factor in the decision, but did throw five innings of one-hit ball with no walks and two strikeouts. Jahnz gave up two hits in two innings and struck out four, picking up the win.
Canestrari was brilliant in defeat, throwing 6 2/3 innings and giving up four hits, two walks while striking out 13.
Moses Brown 5, Lincoln 1
Anthony Fede struck out five and allowed one run in five innings of relief, leading the Quakers past the Lions in this Division I showdown. Fede also brought home Moses Brown’s first run, drawing a first-inning walk. Moses Brown’s Will Haggerty was 1-for-2 with three RBI and a pair of stolen bases in the win. Hope. Martinez, the starter, picked up the win as he threw three shutout innings, allowing only one hit while striking out five. The big blow of the game came off the bat of Adryan Urena, who belted a two-run homer in the third inning. Also contributing to the win were Bronx Discullio, Angelo Fuscellaro, Jayce Bessette and Cam Slack, who each drove in a run.
East Providence 2, North Kingstown 1
Gavin Palombo’s run-producing single in the fifth inning proved to be the difference as the Townies edged the Skippers in a low-scoring pitching duel. An error gave North Kingstown a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but East Providence went ahead by scoring two runs in the fifth. Brian Rutkowski’s sacrifice fly tied it, and Palombo followed by singling down the left-field line to score another. Starter Tyler Dicecco was the beneficiary. He allowed four hits and one run (zero earned) over seven innings, striking out seven and walking three. Ben Davis took the loss for North Kingstown. The reliever went two innings, surrendering two unearned runs on two hits, striking out three and walking none. Cranston West 3, Portsmouth 0
Chris Barboza fired a one-hitter for 6⅔ innings — when he reached his pitch limit — striking out six and walking one to lead the Falcons to the victory. Nick DiLorenzo got the save by getting the final out. Angelo Silvestri provided the offense with three singles and two RBI. Jack Fontaine drove in the other run with asqueeze bunt for Cranston West. Charlie Cordsingled for the Patriots’ only hit.
Barrington 10, Middletown 2
What had been a 2-2 game changed drastically in the final inning when the Eagles strung together a bunch of hits to score 10 runs and easily dispatch the Islanders.
It started when Dom Bruzzi singled home a run. Blake Dolan then singled home another. An error scored one run, Rocco DeFonseca doubled to score two more. Singles by David Redmond and Jack Marley each plated another. Batting around, Bruzzi drew a walk to scoring one, Chip Lambert drew another walk to bring in another and a Cole Kepner single plated the 10th run in the frame.

The day didn’t start the way Crain wanted, as he hit the first Westerly batters he faced before giving up a sacrifice fly to Jack Zerbarini that put the Bulldogs up 1-0 through one.
Despite the run, Crain had a no-hitter going through the sixth before surrendering a meaningless double to Jack Parker. Crain retired the next three hitters and finished his complete game one-hitter with one walk and four strikeouts.
Brett Knight came through for Hendricken with a game-tying double in the second inning and Cameron Daley followed with an RBI single for a 2-1 lead. Frank Tillinghast added to the lead with an RBI single in the third and Crain’s sacrifice fly put the Hawks up 4-1.

Tremblay pitched 6⅔ innings with five strikeouts and five walks. Harold Fernandez recorded the last out for St. Raphael and hit a solo home run in the third inning. The win keeps the Saints in the No. 2 spot in Division II with just one game left in the regular season.
Cam Laramee picked up the loss for Burrillville, but he went 2-for-4 at the plate. AJ Escalera also went 2-for-4 and Jack Dichiaro hit a solo home run. Burrillville dropped to the five spot in the RPI standings with the loss.

Sumner was flat-out dominant, sitting West Warwick batters down as fast as they could get up. The Chariho junior threw all seven innings and gave up just two hits with three walks while striking out 14.
Sumner also provided all the offense he needed in the third inning, hitting an RBI single that scored Gavin Apice. The score remained 1-0 until the seventh, when the Chargers put up four runs that weren’t necessary.

La Salle 11, Smithfield 0
The Rams hit three home runs and Hailey Vigneau threw five innings of one-hit ball in an 11-0 win over the Sentinels.

Up 4-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth, Nikki Pallotta hit a two-run homer to left and two batters later, Elle Kershaw hit a solo shot to left. Alivia Ring added a two-run homer in the inning to make it 9-0 before Phoenyx Silva walked things off via the 10-run rule with a two-run homer, her 19th of the season.

East Providence 9, Moses Brown 7
Aubrey Bernard used her bat for the biggest hit of the game and her legs ended up providing the run that really mattered in a 9-7 win over the Quakers.
Errors haunted Moses Brown all afternoon and a one-out misplay in the bottom of the sixth ignited an East Providence rally and put Ella Grimley on second base. Bernard followed with a double to break the 6-6 tie and after moving to third after a hit by Cassie Dulude, Bernard scored on a passed ball to make it a two-run game before Nethania Figueroa’s groundout brought home one more. North Kingstown rallied in the fifth and loaded the bases with one out before Riley McHale drew a walk to tie the game. A passed ball put another run on the board to make it 5-4 at the end of the inning. McHale drew another bases-loaded walk in the sixth to add the final run.

Sousa also gave herself all the runs she needed, hitting an RBI triple in the third inning before scoring on Sophie Roman’s sacrifice fly for the 2-0 advantage. Sousa finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs and one RBI.

Spring sports teams will hit the field soon; here are 10 stories we’ll be watching in 2025

The state golf championships promise to be tightly contested, with several talented golfers vying for the title in both the boys and girls divisions.
Spring officially started on Thursday and the weather is very much trying to convince us that it’s really here.
But we all know that won’t happen until the 2025 RIIL spring sports season starts playing its first games.
The fall flew by and winter wasn’t the grind it usually is, sending us into a spring that seemed to arrive faster than usual. This season promises to be as good as springs of the past and with some of the talent the state has, may be better.
What stories are there? Plenty. We’ll discover many of them once athletes start hitting their respective fields. But there are also plenty of other stories and events we can’t wait to see happen as we try to be patient as fields dry out and teams get ready to go.
Below you’ll find 10 we’re looking forward to:
Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.
The future Olympian
Maybe that title is putting a lot on West Warwick’s Lisa Raye, but her chances of someday running in the Summer Olympics is definitely within her grasp. Since her freshman year, Raye has been the perfect superstar — quiet, unassuming and willing to put on a show every time she steps on the track. She’s the fastest high school sprinter in the country and there’s no question about her winning gold medals at the state championships; it’s more about how many records she’ll shatter. Raye is a special athlete — probably ranking behind Elizabeth Beisel as the second-greatest high school athlete, boy or girl, in the state’s history. Whether it’s an ordinary dual meet or at states, watching her in person is really the only way you can appreciate her talent. Alas, this spring will be your last chance to see her on a high school track, as Raye announced she’ll be graduating West Warwick one year early to attend the University of Georgia and start her college training in the fall. Don’t blink, because you just might miss her.
A diamond on the diamond
It didn’t take long for Phoenyx Silva to establish herself as one of Rhode Island’s best softball players. She came in playing with the type of fire and intensity you rarely see on the field, never mind from a freshman. While she’s calmed her approach — valuing fun as much as the competition — over the last three years, what she does to close her magical career will be something to watch. Silva is the most dangerous hitter the state has ever seen. Her ability to hit any ball that comes near the plate to a different time zone is something to see, but her discipline in the box is more impressive. Better than that, Silva has developed into a leader and while this iteration of La Salle softball might be the best team in the history of the state, Silva won’t let anyone think a state title will just be surrendered.
Will North Kingstown rise to the occasion?
There won’t be a team hungrier for a title than the North Kingstown boys volleyball team. The Skippers’ impressively talented senior class has been the state’s best regular-season team the last two seasons, only to suffer two heartbreaking losses. As sophomores, they were upset at home in the D-I semifinals by Chariho; last year, NK had four championship points in the fifth set before falling to La Salle. With three first-team All-Staters back from last season — outside hitters Ryan Harrington and Cody Tow, along with libero Stephen Dufour — watching the Skippers lock in and navigate the spring will be something to watch. Revenge Tour, activated.
The dynasties
There’s a reason the La Salle boys lacrosse team is going for a 13th straight state title and the Moses Brown girls lacrosse team is chasing its ninth in the last 10 seasons. This is the part where the vast majority of the state cries about recruiting and private schools and completely ignores the cultures that both programs spent over a decade building. These are high school teams run like college programs where players come in wanting and willing to be pushed to the limit. There are no excuses, just accountability, and the results speak for themselves. The Rams and Quakers leave you with two choices — be appreciative of their greatness or envious. They’re going to keep working toward it either way and if something doesn’t go right — and with the talent both have, state titles seem like a lock — they’ll be the first to line up and congratulate the team that beats them.
The quiet superstar
Throwers don’t usually garner the same type of attention runners receive during the track season. Even at the state championships while all eyes are on the track, the throwing events are off in the distance, a mere afterthought for the meet. Woonsocket’s Shamrock Thoun might change that this spring. Thanks to Marc Piette, the Villa Novans have become the state’s best throwing program and Thoun is their next great superstar. The junior fully committed to throwing in the last year, changing his diet and workouts. This winter, he earned his first state gold. He followed that with wins in two national meets, setting himself up for what could be a record-breaking spring. Who’s records? Tarik Robinson-O’Hagan, the former Woonsocket star who’s now one of the best in the country at Ole Miss. Thoun doesn’t quite possess the same swagger as the Woonsocket alum, but he lets his talent speak for him.
Spreading the love
I’m not sure if it’s being done purposely or has happened simply by coincidence, but the RIIL’s scheduling of its fall and winter championships has been practically perfect. For years the league stacked championship weekends — with three-plus events happening on a single day. Families are sometimes forced to choose between their children’s games, students weren’t able to support a classmate because they were busy supporting another playing at the same time and championship teams weren’t given the shine they deserved because of how many events were happening at once. Things changed this season and hopefully, with a bounty of spring sports, the RIIL can line the schedule up so we can continue to have one sport — or at most, two — having its championship on that particular day.
An ace up their sleeve
Patrick Clemmey hasn’t had a chance to start a varsity game, but he’ll have plenty of eyes on him in his senior season. Expectations will be high around Hendricken’s 6-foot-5, left-handed senior pitcher, but the excitement surrounding Clemmey should be less about seeing how he compares to brother Alex — now a top prospect in the Washington Nationals system — and more about getting a chance to play high school baseball. An arm injury took him off the field his sophomore season and his health was paramount as he continued to recover his junior year. Clemmey, who’s set to attend and play at Vanderbilt in the fall, can throw in the 90s, which is certainly something to watch regardless of who’s doing it. Seeing Clemmey healthy and having this opportunity makes it even better.
All ‘fore’ one
The battles for state championships will be more dramatic in some sports than others, but it’s hard not to consider the chase for state golf glory — both boys and girls — as the closest race in the state. There is plenty of talent on the boys side, but seeing Prout sophomore defending champ Rocco Capalbo duke it out with La Salle sophomore Drew MacLeod at Cranston Country Club again will be even more exciting than it was last year. The girls field is equally loaded with La Salle senior Olivia Williams back to defend her crown — her second in three seasons — with Barrington senior Lily Dessel and Moses Brown’s Adriana Eaton — the 2023 champ — creating a three-horse race that will likely come down to the final hole of the season.
Same face, new place
There are few better parts of spring than seeing random star athletes competing in a spring sport for the first time. It’s usually a senior who’s wrapped up their final basketball season or was done with the grind of year-round soccer and wants to compete with their friends one final time. They pick up a lacrosse stick or racket, or give volleyball a try, or see if they can contribute on a baseball or softball field. Seeing athletes be athletes is always fun, but seeing stars take on the challenge of a sport completely out of their comfort zone also shows you how great high school sports are. Who will it be this year? We’ll start seeing names in a few weeks, but you can be certain that by late April, there will be at least one kid out there playing a big role in chasing a championship with their friends.
Never last, or least
In many of these types of stories, Xenia Raye gets lumped in with her sister. The truth of the matter is that she deserves her own recognition and the spring is the time she gets to shine. Xenia is one of the greatest track athletes the state’s ever produced and if things go right, she’ll get a chance to have a record-setting season. While younger sister Lisa is the better of the two in shorter distances, Xenia sparkles in the 400. It’s a perfect event for her, a blend of power and speed, and her dominance in the race isn’t hard to see. Last spring she set a state meet record with a time of 54.43. If she closes her impossibly amazing career at West Warwick with a state record and another team title, it would be a fitting final chapter before she moves on to Georgia and beyond.
The weather was great and so were the games. Here’s what happened in high school sports Wednesday.
Pilgrim boys lacrosse coach Alexander Gregson gave his team a halftime speech. The Patriots came back from a five-goal deficit to beat North Kingstown 10-9. The win was the Patriots’ first over a traditional Division I team this season. The Eagles beat the Quakers 7-0 in Division I baseball. The Quakers beat the Eagles 5-2 in Division II baseball on Wednesday. The game was a pitchers’ duel between Barrington and Moses Brown, with Barrington winning 5-0. The next game for the Eagles is Friday against Cumberland, with the winner advancing to the next round of the Division I playoffs in the state tournament. The winner of that game will advance to the state championship game in New York City in the spring. The final game of the season will take place in the fall. The winners will be crowned state champions in the Division II championship game on May 31. The loser will be the runner-up in the D-II championship game. The championship game will be held in New Jersey on May 28.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – The halftime speech Pilgrim boys lacrosse coach Alexander Gregson gave his team was very much one no child wants to hear. He wasn’t mad at the Patriots’ first-half effort, he was disappointed – and it had little to do with the five-goal deficit they were facing against North Kingstown.
In the second half, Pilgrim made sure its coach didn’t feel that way after the game.
The comeback started in the third quarter and after losing a fourth-quarter lead, Carter Clifton managed to slip a goal in the net just before the buzzer to send the game overtime. In the extra sessions, Clifton came up big again, scoring the game-winner to give the Patriots a 10-9 win over the Skippers.
Pilgrim was sloppy in the first half and North Kingstown was more than happy to take advantage, scoring three straight to go ahead 3-1 after the first quarter and getting a goal from Xander Viens in the waning seconds to lead 6-1 at the break.
Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.
Gregson kept it straight with his team, telling them that they put in too much work on a daily basis to play uninspired lacrosse the way they did over the first two quarters.
The players took the message to heart. The comeback was slow and steady, as Pilgrim avoided turnovers and made the most of every possession.
By the end of the third quarter, the Patriots cut the Skippers’ lead to 7-6 and took an 8-7 lead with 5:28 left in the game on a goal by Clifton.
North Kingstown was reeling, but it still had plenty of fight left. Brady Bennett came through first, getting the tying goal with 2:16 to play and after a win on the face-off, Connor Leach found the net to put the Skippers ahead 9-8.
It looked like the game was going to end there, but Pilgrim got the ball back and a penalty put NK in a man-down situation. With less than 10 seconds left, Marcus Walsh tried to find space to work and ended up finding Clifton, who cleaned up a rebound and put the ball in the net as the clock hit zeroes. The Patriots celebrated as the refs discussed if the goal was good before confirming a four-minute overtime period was coming.
Pilgrim got the ball off a North Kingstown turnover, called a quick time out and set up a play. It looked like the Skippers had broken it up, but Clifton – searching for space in front of the net – found a way to get his stick on the loose ball and flick it in for the game-winning goal.
It was the Patriots’ first win over a traditional Division I team this season. Pilgrim, the runners-up in D-II the last two seasons, moved up to D-I this year and had four victories against D-II teams and one against South Kingstown, another D-I newcomer, before Wednesday’s win. The Patriots (7-3) will try to grab another win Friday when it hosts Cumberland.
North Kingstown falls to 3-3 with the loss and will look to get back on track Monday when it travels to play rival South Kingstown at Curtis Corner Middle School.

Cumberland 12, North Kingstown 10
A seven-run fourth inning gave the Clippers the lead for good as they held off a late Skipper comeback to grab the 12-10 victory.
Down 5-1 heading to the fourth, Cumberland took advantage of walks and some NK miscues to cut the deficit to 5-3 before Cadence Hebert hit an RBI single to make it a one-run game. Isabella Iannuccilli followed with a two-run single to put the Clippers on top and a groundout and another Skipper error made it 8-5.
North Kingstown answered with two in the bottom half. The teams traded runs in the sixth but Cumberland added some much-needed insurance with three in the top half of the seventh, highlighted by Hebert’s RBI double.
The Skippers mustered up a comeback and Gianna Amedeo’s two-out two-run double made it 12-10. Freshman Madelyn Crawford bore down and got a fly ball to right to end the game and clinch the win for Cumberland.

The Mt. Hope bats continued to work and put up five in the third. Sofia Haberman drove home a run on a sac fly and Callie DaPonte had an RBI single as the Huskies went up 7-0.

Barrington 9, Scituate 6
Cora Florianib’s three-run homer capped a six-run seventh inning and the Eagles held off a Spartans’ rally to pick up the 9-6 win.
Tied at three heading to the seventh, Barrington took advantage of walks, wild pitches and Scituate miscues to add two runs on the scoreboard. Grace Fontaine came up with an RBI single to add to the lead and after an Ariana Renzi single, Floriani – a freshman – hit a home run to center field to make it 9-3.
The runs were needed. Scituate came firing back, with Victoria Geisser hitting a two-run double to make it a four-run game before scoring on an Isabella DeFusco single.

Sousa made sure the runs stuck. Entering the game in the fifth, the sophomore – who threw a no-hitter against Johnston on Monday – threw two clean innings before an error and a single gave the Titans a chance to tie the game, Sousa made sure it didn’t happen, getting a fly out and ground out to end the game.
