Haibargaon becomes 1st Assam stn to get makeover under Amrit Bharat scheme
Haibargaon became the first railway station in Assam, among 50 stations identified in the state, to be inaugurated under the scheme. Built in 1887, the 138-year-old British-era structure was established to facilitate tea cultivation. Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya said the inauguration of the Amrit Bharat stations across the country was an extremely important step towards building a new India. Issuing a statement on the refurbished station, the NFR said the inauguration ceremony stood out as a landmark in the national roll-out of Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) as Haibargaon became the first railway station in Assam, among 50 stations identified in the state, to be inaugurated under the scheme.
Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, while addressing the occasion, said the inauguration of the Amrit Bharat stations across the country was an extremely important step towards building a new India. The governor termed the development as ‘historic’ and a moment of pride for the people of Haibargaon and its adjoining areas.
He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to PM Modi and union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for their visionary leadership that led to Haibargaon being included as one of the stations under the scheme.
He described the occasion as more than an inauguration, representing the collective aspirations of the people of Assam.
Highlighting the remarkable transformation that Indian Railways has undergone in the past decade, Acharya said that it had evolved from a transport service to a vital instrument of national unity, regional integration and inclusive development. He said the Haibargaon station had been comprehensively redeveloped to reflect both modern amenities and Assamese heritage, showcasing local art and cultural motifs such as the ‘gamosa’, Bihu and Ahom architectural elements while promoting the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.

“I am confident that this redeveloped station at Haibargaon will not only reduce geographical distances, but will also fulfil the aspirations of the common people, while boosting tourism, connectivity and regional development of Assam,” he added. The governor said the redevelopment of the station will significantly boost connectivity, commerce and passenger facilities in the region, turning it into a gateway to major tourist destinations including Kaziranga National Park, Laokhowa wildlife sanctuary and Bordowa Than.
Acharya said the PM’s vision of ‘Act East, Act Fast, Act First’ has been transforming the region through expanded rail, air and road connectivity. He affirmed that the journey towards India@2047—a developed, inclusive, and green India—will see Assam and the northeast emerge as one of the most vibrant and prosperous regions in the country.
Meanwhile, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma in a post on X said the redeveloped Haibargaon station restored a piece of history. “This iconic 138-year-old station, a key gateway to Kaziranga, was refurbished at a cost of Rs 15.85 crore under the #AmritBharatStation scheme. It will now offer enhanced passenger amenities and ensure ease of access to the station with a host of facilities,” he said.
“The redevelopment of Haibargaon station is symbolic not only of technological and architectural upliftment but also of the govt’s intent to bring NE India into the fold of rapid national development.”

A day before the inauguration of the redeveloped 138-year-old Haibargaon station in Assam by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the engineers and the officials of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) gave final touches on Wednesday, officials said.
Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of the NFR Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said Haibargaon station in central Assam’s Nagaon becomes the first railway station in the northeastern state among 50 stations identified in the state for redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS).
He said that the Prime Minister would virtually inaugurate 103 redeveloped railway stations across the country, including Assam’s Haibargaon station, on May 22.
“Thursday would be a momentous occasion for the state of Assam and the northeast region. This event stands out as a landmark in the national rollout of the ABSS as Haibargaon would be the first redeveloped railway station out of 50 stations identified in Assam, to be inaugurated under this ambitious scheme,” the CPRO said.
He said that the inauguration is part of a nationwide event covering 103 redeveloped stations, where Haibargaon’s inclusion, reconstructed at a project cost of approximately Rs 15.85 crore, signals the beginning of a new chapter for rail infrastructure in the region.
Sharma said that, unlike other inaugurations, Thursday carries special significance as it showcases the Prime Minister’s unwavering focus on transforming grassroots infrastructure and bridging regional gaps through modern connectivity.
The redevelopment of Haibargaon station is symbolic not only of technological and architectural upliftment but also of the government’s intent to bring the northeast region of India into the fold of rapid national development, he pointed out.
“It is a proud moment for NFR as well as Assam, as it leads the state’s participation in one of the Indian Railways’ most ambitious station redevelopment initiatives.”
Sharma said that the selection of Haibargaon as the first station to be inaugurated under ABSS in Assam reflects its strategic importance and the successful execution of the project with a clear vision for passenger-centric modernisation.
With its upgraded amenities, improved accessibility and cultural aesthetics, the station sets a benchmark for the 49 other stations in Assam lined up for redevelopment, he said.
The CPRO said that as the Prime Minister inaugurates this gateway to a modern rail experience, Haibargaon emerges not just as a station but as a symbol of progress, pride and promise for the people of Assam and the northeast region.

Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), the 103 stations, redeveloped at a cost of around Rs 1,100 crore, are located in 86 Districts.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday virtually inaugurated the redeveloped 138-year-old Haibargaon railway station in central Assam’s Nagaon district as part of a national programme involving the inauguration of 103 redeveloped railway stations in 86 districts across the country.
Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials said that Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, Assam Revenue Minister Keshab Mahanta and other important personalities were present at the inaugural function.

Indian Railways is undergoing a major transformation to boost infrastructure and enhance the passenger experience and travelling comfort. In his post-budget announcement, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stressed on the modernization of existing infrastructure. The national transporter has identified 1,275 railway stations across the country including the border areas for redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The works of station upgradation are generally executed under Plan Head- 53 Customer Amenities. The allocation of funds for the development and maintenance of stations is done zonal Railway-wise. The Railways has identified 72 stations for transformation in Andhra Pradesh, 86 stations in Bihar and 49 stations in Assam. It has also identified one station in Arunachal Pradesh to be redeveloped. The list of stations for redevelopment (state-wise) is as follows:Andhra Pradesh: 72 stations. Bihar: 86 railway stations to be upgraded. Assam: 49 stations. Uttar Pradesh: One station. Uttarakhand: 1 station.
