Memorial Day topped off a busy holiday travel period in the sky and on the roads. “The day we flew in, it was packed with people,” said Gregory Adams, a Pittsburgh traveler. Adams experienced the Memorial Day travel rush in Boston for his grandson’s baptism. He is one of a projected 3.6 million Americans AAA said would travel by air during the Memorial Day travel period, Thursday-Monday. “I packed my bags last night before I had to go to the big red-carpet event. I had the majority of it packed, so all I had to do was come home, come back, get my shower, set my alarm and just get started on the road this morning,” said Rose Marie DiCriscio, who flew into Pittsburgh after spending the weekend in Nashville for the K-LOVE Fan Awards. Travelers returning home to Pittsburgh prepared for potentially packed airports. However, AAA predicted most of the action would be on the roads, with a projected 39.4 million opting to drive to and from their Memorial Day destinations. “It’s just easier instead of having to drive to Philadelphia International or somewhere else. It’s just easier altogether,” said Derek Renninger at the Oakmont Plum service plaza along the Pennsylvania Turnpike. He and Rose Drumeler road-tripped from Cleveland, Ohio, back to their hometown of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, on Memorial Day.“It’s really just the cheaper option, too, we thought. Just with six hours in the car, gas is cheaper than the flights,” Drumeler told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4. Back at Pittsburgh International Airport, officials are gearing up for a busy summer travel season. Eight airlines are adding new or returning flights to meet the travel demands of passengers in the Steel City. It inconvenienced us for sure,” Charly Doan said after arriving at PIT Monday.Other travelers said they’ve had their Real ID for a while now. “We don’t like to wait until the last minute, especially with regard to travel,” Adams said. “So, we’ve been prepared for that several months ago.”AAA projected a record-breaking 45.1 million people would be travelling during the 2025 Memorial Day travel period.
