CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. — The Upper Allen Township Park Passport is both a guide and a challenge for families interested in being more active over the summer.

It also celebrates the 175th anniversary of the township.

The passport was made in partnership with the company Bandwango.

Launched in May of this year, more than 400 people have already signed up for the pass.

“We always hope that this is a lifestyle change, we want kids and parents and families in the township to be healthy; a lot of people know about our key parks like Fischer, Friendship and Winding Hill, but what we’re really doing with this pass is drawing them into some of the other parks that we have that they may not know about,” said assistant township manager, Tim Wendling.

The pass is free to sign up, does not require an app to download and can be accessed through the Upper Allen Township website.

People visit fourteen parks and build points every visit, which can be redeemed for prizes like a T-shirt or lightsaber.

“As long as you’re within a quarter of a mile, you can hit the check-in button and your GPS checks it in automatically and then it keeps track for you as you go throughout the summer,” Wendling said. “You can only check in once throughout all the parks and get all the prizes, it is a onetime thing, but it is really easy to just go to the park and check in, spend some time there, and go to the next park the next day.”

Although the initiative targets families with children, anyone can sign up and take advantage of the passport.

People have until Aug. 15 to visit the parks and earn points. All prizes redeemed must be picked up at the Upper Allen Township building.

The passport features these 14 parks:
