Special Honor Flight organized for veterans unable to travel
The Honor Flight is a way for veterans to travel to Washington, D.C., to see memorials built in their honor. Some veterans aren’t able to make the trip due to their health. Organizers with the Honor Flight Tri-State are lending them their wings to experience the nation’s capital from home. The program takes about three hours and ends with mail call.
The Honor Flight is a way for veterans to travel to Washington, D.C., to see memorials built in their honor.
Unfortunately, some veterans aren’t able to make the trip due to their health.
That is why local organizers are offering a Flightless Honor Flight this weekend.
For veterans who can’t fly, organizers with the Honor Flight Tri-State are lending them their wings to experience the nation’s capital from home.
On Sunday, veterans will gather at a retirement home on the west side to participate in a special program.
“We have a movie and we do the same conversation that we did in the morning, similar, you know, prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance,” described Tri-State Honor Flight Director Cheryl Popp. “Sometimes they have a choir or a band.”

In addition to the welcome ceremony, the day includes a virtual tour around Washington, a lunch, a parade, and even in-flight service.
“Usually, the people that work for the facility will be like flight attendants and they’ll dress up and they’re all in the same clothes and they’re like, ‘Welcome to your flight,’ and then they have a little snack bag for each one so they can, you know, be on the flight,” Popp added.
The program takes about three hours and ends with mail call.
