At least 11 people died and over others were injured in the stampede that took place near the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday evening during the victory celebrations of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
“Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered to increase the compensation amount for the kin of deceased to ₹ 25 lakh each. Earlier the government had announced a compensation of ₹ 10 lakh each,” a statement from the office of the chief minister stated.
The stampede broke out as thousands of RCB fans gathered at the venue to catch a glimpse of the team after their first-ever title win in the Indian Premier League. The felicitation was organised by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA).
Earlier, Siddaramaiah had announced a compensation of ₹ 10 lakh to the kin of the victims while ordering a magisterial enquiry into the incident.
However, the opposition BJP questioned the compensation amount and urged the government to raise it to ₹ 25 lakh.
“They have announced only ₹10 lakh as compensation. When someone died due to an elephant attack in Kerala, you gave ₹25 lakh; then for the people of our state who lost their lives, ₹50 lakh compensation must be given. The RCB owners must also provide compensation,” Karnataka BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra had said.
