June 8 – Seattle Mariners center fielder Julio Rodriguez left Saturday night’s 8-6 loss to the host Los Angeles Angels in the third inning after getting hit in the right ankle area by a 98.1 mph liner by teammate Randy Arozarena while attempting to steal third base.
Rodriguez got X-rays at Angel Stadium on his ankle which came back negative, according to reports after the game, with the outfielder listed as day to day, manager Dan Wilson said.
“There’s a high chance that I should be in the lineup,” Rodriguez told reporters. “So just seeing how it reacts through the night and like how I wake up tomorrow. But I feel very positive that tomorrow will be a better day.”
A two-time All-Star, Rodriguez had singled to lead off the inning and stole second base in the game in Anaheim, Calif. After Cal Raleigh struck out, Arozarena hit an infield single that struck Rodriguez.
Rodriguez, who was 2-for-2 with one run, had to be helped back to the dugout by Mariners vice president of high performance and medical Rob Scheidegger and assistant athletic trainer Kevin Orloski. Seattle failed to score in the inning with the game tied 4-4.
The 24-year-old Rodriguez was replaced in center field by Leody Taveras. Rodriguez is batting .254 with 10 home runs, 33 RBIs and 11 steals in 14 attempts in 62 games this season.
“In the beginning, it was very painful,” Rodriguez said, “and I couldn’t really feel my foot a whole lot or move it a whole lot — and not even like walk properly. But after we kind of started treating it, everything started reacting better right away.”

X-rays came back negative and Rodríguez was optimistic after the game that he could be in the lineup for the Mariners’ series finale in Anaheim on Sunday afternoon.
“I feel decent,” Rodríguez said. “We took some X-rays and everything looked good, so that’s the biggest and most important thing. So yeah, I feel fine. I did a lot of things here in the training room and I should be able to feel better tomorrow.”
Rodríguez was attempting to steal third base in the third inning when Arozarena sent a scorching 98.1 mph one-hopper toward the hole between shortstop and third base. Rodríguez tried to get out of the way, but the ball hit him on the upper portion of his right ankle.
Rodríguez, in obvious pain, began limping around before lying down near the Angels’ third-base dugout. He was tended to there by Mariners trainers for several minutes before limping off the field with assistance.
Rodríguez said the his ankle reacted well to the treatment and that the swelling subsided.
“Obviously at the beginning, it was very painful,” Rodríguez said. “I couldn’t really feel my foot a whole lot or move it a whole lot. … But after we started treating it, everything started reacting better right away.”
Leody Taveras came off the bench in the bottom of the third inning to replace Rodríguez in center field.
Three pitches after Taveras entered the game, he misjudged a shallow fly ball from Zach Neto. The ball kicked off Taveras’ leg, which allowed Neto to take second base for a leadoff double. Later in the inning, Taveras was unable to make a leaping catch at the wall on a game-tying RBI double by Chris Taylor.
Rodríguez is batting .254 with 10 home runs, three triples, six doubles, 11 stolen bases and a .742 OPS in 62 games this season. He’s hitting .345 over his past eight games, including a pair of two-hit games against the Angels on Friday and Saturday. He also made a spectacular home-run robbery on Friday night.
The Mariners (32-31) have lost five straight games and 10 of their last 13. They will look to avoid being swept for a second straight series when the face the Angels at 1:07 p.m. on Sunday.
“We’ll have to look at it tomorrow and reassess,” Wilson said of Rodríguez’s status. “… It’s day to day right now and we’ll see what it is tomorrow.”

The M’s ended up losing 8-6 to the Angels and will be trying to avoid a sweep on Sunday. Leody Taveras replaced Rodrísuez in center field in the bottom of the inning and immediately had an issue as he misread Zach Neto’s short fly ball.
X-rays on Rodríguez’s ankle came back negative and with some quick treatment the M’s center fielder said there’s a chance he could be back in the lineup for Sunday’s series finale.
The M’s ended up losing 8-6 to the Angels and will be trying to avoid a sweep on Sunday.
“It reacted very well with the treatment, even like for the swelling to go down. So I feel very good,” Rodríguez said.
Rodríguez was attempting to steal third base when Arozarena made contact with the pitch from Angels starter Jack Kochanowicz, which appeared headed for left field. The ball had an exit velocity off Arozarena’s bat of 98.1 mph and caught Rodríguez squarely where the right ankle meets the foot.
Rodríguez said he looked in to find the ball hearing the crack of the bat but didn’t see it until it was impacting with his ankle.

“In reality, I can’t really control that. All I can control was to get a good jump and go for the base,” Rodríguez said. “The ball found me and that was what the game had for me.”
Rodríguez limped to the railing of the Angels dugout before laying on the field for a few minutes while being assessed by members of the Mariners athletic training staff. He eventually left the field with some assistance and clearly not feeling very good.
“It was very painful. I couldn’t really feel my foot a whole lot or move it a whole lot, even, like, walk properly,” Rodríguez said. “After we started treating it and everything it started reacting better right away.”
Leody Taveras replaced Rodríguez in center field in the bottom of the inning and immediately had an issue as he misread Zach Neto’s short fly ball allowing the ball to drop for a single and Neto to reach second base when it bounced away for an error.
Taveras also misplayed his attempt at a leaping catch at the wall off the bat of Chris Taylor later in the inning, although it was ruled a double.
Rodríguez had singled in his first two at-bats of the game and was 2 for 4 in the opener on Friday. Including his two hits on Saturday, Rodríguez is batting .367 over the past 11 games.

Julio Rodriguez was removed from the game after being hit with a ground ball while trying to steal third base. The Seattle Mariners lost 8-6 to the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday. The injury took place during the top of the third inning. Rodriguez attempted to steal third base as the Angels got a ground ball as they threw it towards his direction. However, instead of getting the ball to the third baseman, they ended up hitting Rodriguez by accident.
Rodriguez immediately reacted to the hit, enduring the impact as he felt a lot of pain from it. Team officials took him out for the remainder of the game as he went 2-for-2 in his at-bats for one run.

What’s next for Julio Rodriguez, Mariners
Unfortunately for Julio Rodriguez, the Mariners couldn’t make a rally in his absence as they lost 8-6 on Saturday.

Seattle initially led 4-2 after the first two innings. Los Angeles responded by outscoring them 6-2 in the next five innings, which had Rodriguez’s absence gain more emphasis. Seattle tried to rally back in the last two innings but only mustered up one run as their efforts fell short.
The Mariners were active with their swings. They landed 14 hits in their 38 at-bats, getting a pair of home runs from Cal Raleigh. However, it wasn’t enough as their bullpen conceded seven RBIs and three homers from the Angels.
Luis Castillo was team’s starting pitcher as he lasted five innings. He struck out five batters while conceding eight hits and four earned runs, finishing with a 3.31 ERA for the night.
Seattle falls to a 32-31 record on the season but remain at the second spot of the AL West Division standings. They are 3.5 games behind the Houston Astros for the top seed in the division.
The Mariners will look to end the head-to-head series against the Angels with a win on Sunday. First pitch will take place at 4:07 p.m. ET.
