Canadian teenager Summer McIntosh smashes 400m freestyle world record
Summer McIntosh breaks 400m freestyle world record with time of 3:54.18 at Canadian Swimming Trials. Still, breaking this world record provoked an emotional outburst rarely seen from McIntosh as she smashed the water and clenched her fist in celebration after noticing her time.
“Touching the wall, you can kind of see my outburst of emotions because I was really not expecting that time. But overall I’m super, super happy,” she told reporters afterward.

McIntosh previously held the world record in this event before Titmus snaffled it, the Canadian recording a time of 3:56.08 in March 2023, almost two seconds slower than the mark she set on Saturday.
This time around, she set off slower but recorded a blistering second half of the race to improve on her time.

Summer McIntosh breaks Ariarne Titmus’ 400-metre freestyle world record. The 18-year-old did it in three minutes and 54.18 seconds at the Canadian trials. McIntosh, 18, is already a three-time Olympic gold medallist and has now reclaimed the 400-metre freestyle world record she held briefly in 2023.
McIntosh shaved 1.20 seconds off Titmus’ world record on Sunday (AEST), touching the wall in three minutes and 54.18 seconds.

In doing so, she became the first female ever to clock less than 30 seconds in every 50-metre lap of a 400m.
McIntosh’s efforts earned the praise of several swimming legends, including Michael Phelps and Ian Thorpe.
“Woah. LFG swimming world,” Phelps commented on social media.
“Amazing! … Congratulations,” Thorpe wrote.
Cody Simpson and Taylor McKeown, Kaylee’s older sister, reacted with mind blown and fire emojis.

It’s not the first time McIntosh has held the world record in the event, having clocked 3:56.08 at the 2023 Canadian world championship trials.
However, that record only survived four months with Titmus stopping the clock at 3:55.38 to win gold at the 2023 world championships in Fukuoka, Japan.
Titmus’ 3:55.38 was the mark McIntosh broke at the Canadian trials on Sunday (AEST).
McIntosh admitted she stepped onto the blocks knowing she “could do something special”.
“Going into tonight I knew that my training has been really good these past few months,” McIntosh told media post-race.

“I am super, super happy with the swim. I did not think I would be that fast. The race did not feel like that. Touching the wall, I was really not expecting that time.
“That last 100, I’m always really, really hurting.
“I could tell by the crowd and the way they were cheering that I was probably close to the world record, so I really tried to push that last part for them.”
The 400m freestyle was McIntosh’s first event of her Canadian trials schedule, where the Canadian team for this year’s Singapore world championships is being decided.
McIntosh is also listed to compete in the 800m and 200m freestyle, the 400m and 200m individual medley, the 200m butterfly and the 200m backstroke.
Australia’s world championship trials will take place in Adelaide, beginning on Monday.
