The IDF and Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) operation that eliminated Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar and Rafah Brigade commander Mohammed Shabaneh involved intensive, precision strikes in a tunnel beneath a Gaza hospital on May 13.

Mahdi Quara, commander of the South Khan Yunis Battalion, was also killed in the operation.

The terror group established a command and control center in a tunnel beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis.

Israel’s military met the challenge of eliminating the terrorists in the tunnel network while avoiding civilian casualties in the hospital above it.

The IDF Southern Command and the Israel Air Force, with the assistance of the Intelligence Directorate and the Shin Bet, executed precision strikes through the complex network of tunnels.

The IAF used precision-guided munitions and aerial observation to avoid damage to the hospital. IAF jets dropped 50 munitions in 30 seconds during the strike.

Brig.-Gen. Barak Hiram, Commander of the IDF’s Gaza Division, said on Monday that Hamas is facing a collapse from within due to operational failures, lack of funds, and dwindling public support.

“Hamas is having an extremely difficult time paying salaries,” he said. “Once their apparatus stops functioning and people stop showing up for work, Hamas ceases to exist.”

Hiram pointed out that Hamas has become desperate because of Israel’s military pressure, along with diplomatic, economic, and psychological means.

“It’s not just heroic operations. It’s the cumulative pressure that will lead to a negotiated release of the hostages and, ultimately, to Hamas’s downfall,” he said.

According to the commander, the regime is particularly concerned about the possibility of internal revolt.

“Dictatorships fear their own people. I believe the last Hamas leader — if we don’t kill him — will be taken out by the people themselves, like Gadhafi in Libya,” he said.

“That will be the moment to establish a new model of governance in Gaza.”
