Sonam, who lived in the quiet Vikrampur area of Indore, never gave off even a hint of trouble. To those around her, she was polite, friendly, and someone you’d never expect to find at the centre of a criminal investigation. “She was a nice, simple girl. We don’t think she would have done it,” said a local resident, echoing the disbelief that has swept the neighbourhood.

In a chilling twist to what began as a romantic getaway, the murder of 29-year-old Raja Raghuvanshi not only stunned the city of Indore but also gripped national attention. The prime suspect? His newlywed wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi.

Just a few weeks ago, Sonam and Raja tied the knot in Indore on May 11. By May 20, they had flown to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. But what should have been a joyful escape soon spiraled into a nightmare that has left both families devastated and a community grappling with disbelief.

On June 2, Raja’s body was recovered from a steep gorge near Weisadong Falls in Meghalaya. His throat was slit, his jewellery missing, and near his body were a bloodied knife and a raincoat; clear indicators that this was not an accident but a cold-blooded murder. But even before his body was discovered, the couple had vanished under mysterious circumstances. Their last known communication with family was on May 23, the same day locals spotted them in the Nongriat area, accompanied by three unidentified men. A day later, their scooter was found abandoned outside a cafe.

The real shock came days later when police announced that Sonam Raghuvanshi had surrendered in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. Meghalaya’s Director General of Police, Idashisha Nongrang, confirmed that Sonam was now in custody and facing serious charges. According to the preliminary investigation, she is alleged to have orchestrated her husband’s murder by hiring four men, some of whom have since been arrested from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The fourth suspect is still on the run.

The arrested men, identified as Raj Kushwaha, Vishal Chauhan, and Akash Rajput, are believed to have been part of a pre-planned plot to kill Raja during the couple’s honeymoon. Police say Sonam coordinated the attack, taking advantage of the remote, forested terrain of Meghalaya to conceal the crime.

The case has since ignited public outrage and fierce debate over motive and justice. In Indore’s Vikrampur locality, where Sonam lived, neighbours remain stunned.

As the case unfolds, two sharply different narratives have emerged. Raja’s family is calling for the harshest possible punishment for Sonam, describing her as the mastermind behind a calculated and brutal murder. “We trusted her,” said Raja’s brother, “but we never imagined she’d be the reason for his death.”

In contrast, Sonam’s father, Devi Singh, maintains her innocence and has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, alleging that the Meghalaya police are framing his daughter. “She’s being made a scapegoat. There’s more to this than what they are showing,” he told reporters.

The incident has sparked a storm on social media, with hashtags like #JusticeForRaja trending across platforms. Many are asking, Who really planned Raja’s murder, and why? Was Sonam a manipulative conspirator or a pawn in a deeper plot?

What remains beyond doubt is the horrifying arc this case has taken; from a wedding ceremony to a honeymoon, and then to a homicide in a distant forest.
