Israel deports activist Greta Thunberg back to Sweden day after Gaza-bound ship seized

Greta Thunberg was one of 12 passengers on the Madleen, a ship carrying aid to Gaza. Israeli naval forces seized the boat without incident early Monday about 200 kilometres off of Gaza’s coast. Israeli officials said that the flotilla was bringing “meager” aid with what amounted to less than a truckload of goods. Israel rejects that charge because it says such ships intend to breach what it says is a lawful naval blockade of Hamas-ruled Gaza. The activists were expected to be brought before a court later Tuesday, the group said.. The other eight activists refused deportation, were being held in detention and their case was set to be heard by Israeli authorities.

Activist Greta Thunberg was deported from Israel on Tuesday, the country’s Foreign Ministry said, a day after the Gaza-bound ship she was on was seized by the Israeli military.

Thunberg left on a flight to France and was then headed to her home country of Sweden, Israel’s Foreign Ministry said in a post on X. It posted a photo of Thunberg, who shuns air travel, seated on a plane.

Thunberg was one of 12 passengers on the Madleen, a ship carrying aid to Gaza that was meant to protest Israel’s ongoing war there and shed light on the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territory, according to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the group behind the journey.

Israeli naval forces seized the boat without incident early Monday about 200 kilometres off of Gaza’s coast, according to the coalition, which along with rights groups, said Israel’s actions were a violation of international law.

Israel rejects that charge because it says such ships intend to breach what it says is a lawful naval blockade of Gaza.

The boat, accompanied by Israel’s navy, arrived in the Israeli port of Ashdod Monday evening, according to Israel’s Foreign Ministry.

Adalah, a legal rights group in Israel representing the activists, said Thunberg, two other activists and a journalist had agreed to be deported and leave Israel. The other eight activists refused deportation, were being held in detention and their case was set to be heard by Israeli authorities, Adalah said.

The activists were expected to be brought before a court later Tuesday, the group added.

Sabine Haddad, a spokeswoman for Israel’s Interior Ministry, said the activists who were being deported Tuesday had waived their right to appear before a judge. Those who did not will face one and will be held for 96 hours before being deported.

Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament who is of Palestinian descent, was also among the volunteers on board. She has been barred from entering Israel because of her opposition to Israeli policies toward the Palestinians. It was not immediately clear whether she was being immediately deported or detained.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Tuesday that one of the detained French activists signed an expulsion order and will leave Israel on Tuesday for France. The other five refused. He said all the activists received consular visits.

On Monday, Adalah, the rights group, said that Israel had “no legal authority” to take over the ship, because the group said it was in international waters and it was headed not to Israel but to the “territorial waters of the state of Palestine.”

Amnesty International said Israel was flouting international law with the naval raid and called on Israel to release the activists immediately and unconditionally.

“The arrest of the unarmed activists, who operated in a civilian manner to provide humanitarian aid, amounts to a serious breach of international law,” Adalah said in a statement.

Israel viewed the ship as a publicity stunt, calling it the “selfie yacht.” Israeli officials said that the flotilla was bringing “meager” aid with what amounted to less than a truckload of goods.

It’s a quadruple swap this time in the trailer of Freakier Friday, a sequel to the 2003 hit comedy, dropped by the makers on Saturday.

Packed with the original film’s humour and fun, the two-minute-11-second-long trailer shows Lindsay Lohan’s Anna, now a mother of a teenage daughter named Harper (Julia Butters), preparing for her second wedding. She is set to marry Eric, a British restaurateur played by Manny Jacinto, who has a daughter named Lily (Sophia Hammons).

However, Lily and Anna don’t get along. Anna thinks of her soon-to-be daughter-in-law as “a little demon thing with an obnoxious accent”. Anna’s mother Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis), with whom she swapped bodies 22 years ago in the original movie, is as sharp and hilarious as ever.

Everything changes for the two families when an encounter with a fortune teller leads to a new generational body swap. While Anna swaps bodies with her daughter Harper, Tess swaps bodies with her soon-to-be granddaughter-in-law Lily. The four-way switch creates a mix of chaos and energy that tests the bond between the family members.

Besides Curtis and Lohan, Chad Michael Murray, Mark Harmon, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky and Rosalind Chao are returning to the cast.

The Acolyte star Manny Jacinto, Never Have I Ever actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Sophia Hammons and Julia Butters are among the new cast members in this instalment.

Canadian filmmaker Nisha Ganatra has directed the Freaky Friday sequel. Andrew Gunn, who produced the first movie, is producing the sequel alongside former Disney executive Kristin Burr. The sequel is adapted from a script by Dollface creator Jordan Weiss.

Freakier Friday is set to hit theatres this year on August 8.

A total of 76 army personnel were airlifted on Saturday from Chaten in North Sikkim, where heavy rainfall had triggered multiple landslides, snapping road connectivity and leaving several areas isolated. Officials said this marks the successful conclusion of coordinated evacuation efforts, which had earlier included the rescue of all stranded tourists from the region.

“Altogether 76 army personnel were airlifted by three MI-17 helicopters. The air evacuation operation from Chaten has concluded today with the helicopters transporting army personnel from Chaten to Pakyong Greenfield Airport,” an official stated.

Simultaneously, an MI-17 helicopter carrying 1,300 kg of relief materials for army personnel and civilians took off from Pakyong Airport on Saturday morning for Chaten. The aircraft had five officials from the Food and Civil Supplies Department on board and was scheduled to return with some army personnel from the site, officials added.

Heavy rainfall in North Sikkim recently triggered multiple landslides, severely disrupting road connectivity. Over 1,600 tourists were left stranded across the towns of Lachen, Lachung, and Chungthang. These tourists were successfully rescued through combined efforts by the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and the Mangan district administration.

Several helicopters were pressed into service to evacuate more than 140 tourists by air, officials confirmed.

Al-Qaida Yemen chief threatens Trump and Elon Musk over Gaza war in first public message

Saad bin Atef al-Awlaki has called for lone-wolf militants to assassinate leaders in Egypt, Jordan and the Gulf Arab states over the Gaza war. The half-hour video message also included images of Trump and Musk, as well as US Vice President Marco Rubio and Secretary of State Pete Hegseth. He replaced AQAP leader Khalid al-Batarfi, whose death was announced by the group in 2024. He already has a USD 6 million US bounty on his head, as Washington says he has publicly called for attacks against the U.S. and its allies. He follows the efforts of Yemen’s Houthi rebels to do the same, as the group has launched missile attacks on Israel and targeted commercial vessels moving through the Red Sea corridor. The US Navy has described their campaign against the Houthis as the most intense combat since World War II.

The leader of al-Qaida’s Yemen branch has threatened both US President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip in his first video message since taking over the group last year.

The half-hour video message by Saad bin Atef al-Awlaki, which spread online early Saturday via supporters of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, also included calls for lone-wolf militants to assassinate leaders in Egypt, Jordan and the Gulf Arab states over the war, which has decimated Gaza.

The video of al-Awlaki’s speech showed images of Trump and Musk, as well as US Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of State Pete Hegseth. It also included images of logos of Musk’s businesses, including the electric carmaker Tesla.

“There are no red lines after what happened and is happening to our people in Gaza,” al-Awlaki said. “Reciprocity is legitimate.”

Yemen’s al-Qaida branch long thought to be most dangerous

Though believed to be weakened in recent years due to infighting and suspected US drone strikes killing its leaders, the group known by the acronym AQAP had been considered the most dangerous branch of al-Qaida still operating after the 2011 killing by US Navy SEALs of founder Osama bin Laden, who masterminded the September 11, 2001, attacks.

In 2022, a US drone strike in Afghanistan killed bin Laden’s successor, Ayman al-Zawahri, who also helped plot 9/11. The September 11 attacks then began decades of war by the US in Afghanistan and Iraq, and fomented the rise of the Islamic State group.

Al-Awlaki already has a USD 6 million US bounty on his head, as Washington says al-Awlaki “has publicly called for attacks against the United States and its allies.” He replaced AQAP leader Khalid al-Batarfi, whose death was announced by the group in 2024.

Israel-Hamas war a focus of the Houthis as well

AQAP seizing onto the Israel-Hamas war follows the efforts of Yemen’s Houthi rebels to do the same. The Iranian-backed group has launched missile attacks on Israel and targeted commercial vessels moving through the Red Sea corridor, as well as American warships. The US Navy has described their campaign against the Houthis as the most intense combat it has faced since World War II.

The Trump administration also launched its own intense campaign of strikes on the Houthis, which only ended before the president’s recent trip to the Middle East.

The Houthis’ international profile rose as the group remains mired in Yemen’s long-stalemated war. Al-Awlaki may be betting on the same for his group, which UN experts have estimated has between 3,000 and 4,000 active fighters and passive members.

The group raises money by robbing banks and money exchange shops, as well as smuggling weapons, counterfeiting currencies and ransom operations, according to the UN.

The Shiite Zaydi Houthis have previously denied working with AQAP, a Sunni extremist group. However, AQAP targeting of the Houthis has dropped in recent years, while the militants keep attacking Saudi-led coalition forces who have battled the Houthis.

“As the Houthis gain popularity as leaders of the Arab and Muslim world’s ‘resistance’ against Israel, al-Awlaki seeks to challenge their dominance by presenting himself as equally concerned about the situation in Gaza,” said Mohammed al-Basha, a Yemen expert of the Basha Report risk advisory firm.

“For a national security and foreign policy community increasingly disengaged from Yemen, this video is a clear reminder: Yemen still matters.”

Donald Trump and climate activist Greta Thunberg are on collision course once again.

The years-old war of words reignited after Thunberg posted a video on Monday, where she claimed she was “kidnapped” by the Israeli forces while on her way to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza aboard the Freedom Flotilla.

In a post on X, Israel’s foreign ministry shared a photo of Thunberg on a plane, saying that she was headed for France.

Earlier, in a pre-recorded video released on social media, the Swedish activist said: “My name is Greta Thunberg and I am from Sweden. If you see this video, we have been intercepted and kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli occupational forces, or forces that support Israel.”

Trump’s response

In response to a reporter’s question regarding Thunberg’s video, Trump revived his signature attack line: “She is a strange person. She is a young, angry person. I don’t know if it’s real anger—it’s hard to believe. She’s certainly different. I think she has to go to an anger management class, that’s my primary recommendation for her.”

He added, “I think Israel has enough problems without kidnapping Greta Thunberg.”

Thunberg, who was among a group of international activists aboard the boat Madleen, claimed the vessel was carrying basic humanitarian supplies—formula, flour, rice, diapers, and women’s sanitary products, destined for Gaza.

‘Selfie seekers’

The Israeli Foreign Ministry dismissed the activists as “selfie seekers,” calling the vessel a “selfie yacht.” In a statement posted on X, the ministry said the activists were “safe and unharmed,” and were being given “sandwiches and water” while being escorted to Israel.

Trump’s comment marks the latest chapter in the public feud between the two, dating back to 2019 when Trump first mocked Thunberg after she addressed the UN Climate Summit in New York, accusing global leaders of failing to act on the climate crisis. “How dare you?” she had said in the speech.

Trump responded at the time by tweeting: “She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!”

In December 2019, Trump again mocked Thunberg after she was named Person of the Year for 2019 by Time, tweeting: “So ridiculous. Greta must work on her Anger Management problem, then go to a good old fashioned movie with a friend! Chill Greta, Chill!

Thunberg, who was then 16, changed her Twitter bio to match Trump’s words: “A teenager working on her anger management problem. Currently chilling and watching a good old fashioned movie with a friend.”

The feud reached another level during the 2020 US presidential election. When Trump tweeted “Stop the count!” during the ballot tallying process, Thunberg shot back with his own words: “So ridiculous. Donald must work on his Anger Management problem, then go to a good old fashioned movie with a friend! Chill Donald, Chill!”

Beyond Trump, Thunberg has drawn criticism from several world leaders who see her brand of activism as oversimplifying complex geopolitical and environmental issues.

The then Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison had warned in 2019 that her climate warnings could fuel “needless anxiety” in children. “I want children growing up in Australia that feel positive about their future,” Morrison had said.

French President Emmanuel Macron also took aim at her after she filed a lawsuit accusing France of inaction on global warming. “She will antagonize societies,” Macron warned.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was more blunt. “I may disappoint you but I don’t share the common excitement about the speech by Greta Thunberg,” Putin said in 2019, following her remarks at the UN. “No one has explained to Greta that the modern world is complex and different and… people in Africa or in many Asian countries want to live at the same wealth level as in Sweden.”

Thunberg’s influence had been dubbed the “Greta effect” by The Guardian in 2019.
