Group of 7 leaders called for a resolution to the crisis in the Middle East in a joint statement Monday that an official familiar with the matter said had gained the support of President Donald Trump after language in the draft was adjusted.

“We urge that the resolution of the Iranian crisis leads to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza,” said the statement, which was attributed to the “G7 leaders.”

That is typically an indication all had signed on, and an official familiar with the matter said it was issued with Trump’s blessing. CNN has reached out to the White House for comment.

Earlier Monday, officials said Trump had indicated he did not intend to sign onto the draft statement, which was being organized by European leaders at the conference.

But after changing some of the language in the document — including calls for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis and upholding international law — Trump signed off, according to an official familiar with the matter.

It was released as Trump was departing the summit early to return to Washington, where he said he needed to monitor the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.

The statement said the G7 leaders “reiterate our commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East.”

Tel Aviv: The Embassy of the United States in Tel Aviv was temporarily closed after the building suffered massive damage following an Iranian missile strike on Sunday night, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee confirmed on Monday. Even as no injuries or casualties were reported among US diplomatic staff, latest videos on social media showed the consulate building was damaged by the explosions.

Mike Huckabee took to X and said, “Our US Embassy in Israel and Consulate will officially remain closed today as shelter in place still in effect. Some minor damage from concussions of Iranian missile hits near Embassy Branch in Tel Aviv but no injuries to US personnel.”

The fresh videos from the damaged buildings in Tel Aviv showed glass and windowpanes broken by the missile attack near the building. The staff of the embassy were asked to take shelter in safe places, adhering to emergency protocols.

It should be noted that the missile attack near the American embassy marks the first direct threat to US diplomatic missions in the region as hostilities between Israel and Iran escalated.

The Group of Seven summit began in Canada on Monday with world leaders scrambling to contain the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program, with U.S. President Donald Trump reiterating his call for the two nations to start negotiating.

“They should talk and they should talk immediately,” he told reporters.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said all G7 leaders agree that they “have to find a way to de-escalate the situation” in the Middle East because the conflict between Israel and Iran risks inflaming the “tinderbox” of Gaza and hurting the global economy.

Starmer said he’d spoken to Trump about the issue, adding that “the risk of the conflict escalating is obvious, I think, and the implications, not just for the region but globally are really immense, so the focus has to be on de-escalation.”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told reporters Monday ahead of the summit beginning in the Canadian Rocky Mountains that Germany is planning to draw up a final communique proposal on the Israel-Iran conflict that will stress that “Iran must under no circumstances be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons-capable material.”

But as Trump met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, he also stressed that it was a mistake to remove Russia from the organization in 2014 and that doing so had destabilized the world. He also suggested it would be a good idea to add China to the G7.

The U.S. president also seemed to put a greater priority on his planned emphasis on addressing his grievances with other nations’ trade policies.

“Our primary focus will be trade,” Trump said of his talks with Carney.

An Iranian missile slipped through Israeli air defenses this morning and smashed into a bus terminal north of Tel Aviv.

The missile dug a deep crater in the upscale suburb of Herzliya and charred the area, where a video verified by NBC News showed firefighters dousing a bus that was on fire.

A massive smoke cloud was seen billowing from the terminal, which Deputy Police Commissioner Tzachi Sharab said would require “a bit more time until it is extinguished.”

There were no casualties, he said.

Israel says it first bombed Iran to stop it from being able to produce nuclear weapons and the “existential threat” they would represent. But the conflict may in the long run serve the opposite purpose: illustrating to Tehran and other nuclear-aspirant nations that nuclear weapons are essential in shielding them against attack.

Countries such as North Korea already pointed to Libya, whose leader, Moammar Gadhafi, gave up his nascent weapons program but was toppled anyway in 2011 after a NATO intervention. That’s one of the reasons Pyongyang has developed its own arsenal — which is believed to have San Francisco and other U.S. cities within range — to protect itself against attempts at Western-backed regime change.

“If you look at the last five or six years, you’ve got a repeated series of incidents that demonstrate nuclear weapons are a really, really powerful deterrence,” said Robert Kelly, a professor specializing in nuclear proliferation at South Korea’s Pusan National University.

As Iran just found out, “if you don’t have them, you get bombed,” he said.
