He signed with the Falcons in 2022 and appeared in two games before going on the reserve/retired list in 2023. He returned to spend some time in the CFL, but is now playing in the Premier Lacrosse League.
Bernhardt said he has no regrets about his circuitous route over the last few years.
“Some people may have all the speculation about leaving at the top of your game, but for me, I just feel that was the right move for me,” Bernhardt said, via Edward Lee of the Baltimore Sun. “I wouldn’t change it. As I said, a lot of great experiences, ups and downs and a lot of good people you meet along the way, and if I didn’t do that, I wouldn’t have had that stuff. So I’m fortunate enough to have been able to go through all of that.”
Bernhardt has scored one goal in two games with the Denver Outlaws since his return.

While playing lacrosse at Maryland, he won the Tewaaraton Award as the country’s top performer in the spring of 2021.
Jared Bernhardt, who starred for Ferris State’s national championship football team last season following a stellar four-year lacrosse career at Maryland, was named to the Atlanta Falcons 53-man opening day roster on Tuesday.
He ran for a team-high 1,421 yards on 159 attempts, ranking as one of the nation’s leading rushers while scoring 26 touchdowns during FSU’s national championship campaign.
Additionally, he completed 87-of-123 (70.7%) throws for 1,322 yards and 11 scores in route to earning Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year accolades.
But it isn’t his football prowess that is making headlines. While playing lacrosse at Maryland, he won the Tewaaraton Award as the country’s top performer in the spring of 2021.
“We’re so excited for Jared and he’s one special player I would never bet against,” said Ferris State football coach Tony Annese in a statement. “He’s an extremely hard worker and dedicated individual who brings out the best in everyone. It’s great he has this special opportunity to continue his career and we’ll be following him when he takes the field.”
Bernhardt signed with the Falcons as a priority free agent following this past spring’s NFL Draft. After playing quarterback for the Bulldogs, he converted to a wide receiver and kick returner role with the Falcons, scoring on a game-winning TD reception in week two of the preseason against the Detroit Lions.
The Bulldog alum joins two other Ferris State products in making NFL 53-man roster this year in fifth-year pro’s Tavierre Thomas (Houston) and Zach Sieler (Miami). Bernhardt is the first Bulldog player under Annese to make the 53-man roster out of preseason camp as a rookie.
The Falcons will open the 2022 NFL season by hosting the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m.
