What are some Commanders’ storylines one month before training camp?
Washington Commanders minicamps, OTAs, voluntary, or mandatory workouts are over. The biggest news entering this week of June 16-20 is that the team did not provide any news regarding Noah Brown and his injury. Brown went down for a pass and did not hop up immediately, signaling to observers that something was not right for Brown. The Commanders went through a boatload of kickers in the 2024 offseason, preseason, and season. None of them are returning. They went out and signed 31-year-old kicker Matt Gay.
The entire offseason, one continuing storyline for the Commanders has been an edge rusher. Which good edge rusher would the Commanders sign during the 2025 free agency signing period? When that did not occur, it was, “Which edge rusher will Washington draft in the 2025 draft?” That didn’t happen either. Oh, but surely they were going to trade for Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson, but the Bengals’ price tag was too steep.
The biggest news entering this week of June 16-20 is that the team actually did not provide any news regarding Noah Brown and his injury last week during team workouts on the field. Brown went down for a pass and did not hop up immediately, signaling to observers that something was not right for Brown.
After making his way slowly to the sidelines and venting in frustration, he was carried via the team cart to the Ashburn facilities. The following day, head coach Dan Quinn told John Keim he wouldn’t speculate on Brown’s injury and that Brown was having an MRI later that day.
Four days later, why do we know nothing more? Why haven’t the Commanders at least made a succinct statement, informing the local media and fan base of Brown’s condition?
The Commanders went through a boatload of kickers in the 2024 offseason, preseason, and season. None of them are returning. They went out and signed 31-year-old kicker Matt Gay. Gay, after kicking for the University of Utah, has kicked in the NFL for the Tampa Bay Bucs (2019), the Los Angeles Rams (2020-22) and the Indianapolis Colts 2023-24.
Now begins the long month until training camp officially begins.
At least one thing we know for sure is that the Commanders drafted the right quarterback in 2024, when they selected Jayden Daniels second overall in the draft. Thus, 2025 is the first season the Commanders have entered training camp with positive energy since 2021, after they won the NFC East with a 7-9 record. You recall, Ron Rivera then signed free agent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, and the Mike Greenbergs of the sports media proceeded to tell viewers how Washington would be a Super Bowl contender.
Rivera failed to produce a winning record that season and in all four seasons as GM and head coach, but now the Commanders have Adam Peters as GM, Dan Quinn as head coach, and Daniels as quarterback. No wonder there is much more excitement going into 2025.
