Angel Reese responds to Olympic legend after fume over awards snub
Angel Reese won BET’s Sportswoman of the Year award for the third year in a row. Reese has had a poor start to the 2025 WNBA season, averaging 10.1 points on 35.8 percent shooting from the field and 33.3 percent from 3-point land. Some fans believe the star has been focusing more on off-court affairs than on the court, leading to a dip in production. Reese’s comments come after Claressa Shields, the two-time Olympic gold medalist, took to social media to express her disappointment with being overlooked for the award. Reese: “Obviously, it really meant something to other people today, because it’s me. And I just focus on basketball. I put my all in this s—. I do” The 23-year-old was speaking after the Chicago Sky’s 85-66 loss to the New York Liberty. Reese continued to say she “loves” being part of a team that “trusts” her and her work, thus allowing non-basketball aspects to remain that way.

Speaking to reporters after the Sky’s 85-66 loss to the New York Liberty, Reese – attempting to contain her emotions after teammate Ariel Atkins defended her from online detractors – explained what it meant to win the award yet again. “Obviously, it really meant something to other people today, because it’s me. And I just focus on basketball,” she began.
“I come into work every day and work. I don’t complain. I don’t care about anything else. I have bad days. I haven’t been playing well at all, and I can sit here and just mope around and point the finger, but it’s been me. And I take accountability. I come in every day and try to be better than the next, and and better than the last, and I know my teammates trust me.
“I know they have my back. Ariel has my back through everything.” Reese continued to say she “loves” being part of a team that “trusts” her and her work, thus allowing non-basketball aspects to remain that way.

“I’m just here just to come to work every day and go home. That’s all I want to do: Is just come to work, and being able to enjoy my job that I love people would die and kill to have this job, and being able to play with the best players in the world means a lot to me. I put my all in this s—. I do.”
Reese’s comments come after Shields, the two-time Olympic gold medalist, took to social media to express her disappointment with being overlooked for the award.
“Still don’t know how I didn’t win the Sportswoman of the Year for the @BETAwards but Congrats to Angel Reese and all the other Nominees. I just thought accolades mattered,” she wrote on X.

Shields added that while she was upset about the loss, she meant no disrespect, writing: “Ain’t nobody saying Angel Reese don’t have accolades or she not good…. I’m saying I thought the person with ‘THE MOST’ accolades & accomplishments would win the Award. I’m team Angel Reese!”
In the end, the 30-year-old added one more comment to the conversation. “I’m not joining in on any hate train when it comes to Angle Reese [sic], I have mad respect for her and all the other female athletes that excel in their sport. As for my earlier comments I am allowed to express my feelings, I was shocked I didnt win, I was under the impression the category was graded on accolades of your sport. It’s OK to be a competitor.”
Brittney Griner breaks silence after being accused of Caitlin Clark dig
Brittney Griner has denied calling Caitlin Clark a ‘f—— white girl’ The Atlanta Dream star was filmed after fouling out of a game against the Indiana Fever last month. Some fans believe she was making a dig at Clark, while others believe she said it to vent her frustration at the officiating. Griner is one of the WNBA’s biggest stars, having played in the league since 2013. The 23-year-old is the league’s reigning Rookie of the Year and was named Athlete of the year by TIME magazine in 2024. She joined Atlanta ahead of this season after winning the 2014 championship with the Phoenix Mercury and three Olympic gold medals with Team USA. The Fever, who’ve missed the injured Clark in recent games, boast a solid 5-5 record to remain firmly in playoff contention.

Atlanta Dream star Brittney Griner has emphatically denied calling Caitlin Clark a “f—— white girl” during a game last month.
Clark’s Indiana Fever beat Atlanta 81-76 in May, with Griner scoring just five points during the early-season meeting. Clark produced a solid 11-point game for the Fever, but it was her teammate, Natasha Howard, who stole the show with 26 points.

The Dream got their revenge over Indiana last week with a 77-58 victory, helping them move toward an 8-3 WNBA record this season. The Fever, who’ve missed the injured Clark in recent games, boast a solid 5-5 record to remain firmly in playoff contention. Speaking of Clark, she recently expressed her desire to stay in Indiana for the rest of her career.

While Howard top-scored during the Fever’s victory in May, it was Griner who dominated the headlines. She was filmed venting her frustration after fouling out of the game, with some fans on social media alleging she was making a dig at Clark.
But other fans believe Griner actually said “f—— whack call” after fouling out against the Fever, venting her frustration at the officiating rather than Clark.
Before Atlanta’s 89-56 victory against the Washington Mystics this weekend, Griner was asked by Outkick reporter Dan Zaksheske what she said after fouling out against the Fever. She replied: “I remember fouling out, being mad.

“I remember fouling out on, I believe it was, Howard driving to the basket. They said I put my hand in. But hey, you’re never really happy with the officiating.”
Zaksheske then asked Griner again what she said. The WNBA star replied: “I really can’t remember what I said, honestly.”
The journalist offered to show the clip of Griner from that game that went viral on social media, but she claimed watching it “wouldn’t help” jog her memory.
Zaksheske tried again to get an answer from Griner after the Mystics game and was more direct in his questioning, asking the basketball player if she said “f—— white girl.”
Griner emphatically responded: “No, I would never say that. Like, there’s no place for that in our league. Wouldn’t say that. I was mad about the call.”
Zaksheske then referenced his earlier chat with Griner, when she claimed she couldn’t remember what she said after fouling out against the Fever.
Griner, once again, emphatically stated: “I know it wasn’t that because I wouldn’t use that type of language.”
Griner is one of the WNBA’s biggest stars, having played in the league since 2013. The 10-time WNBA All-Star joined Atlanta ahead of this season after winning the 2014 championship with the Phoenix Mercury and three Olympic gold medals with Team USA.

For Van Lith, this was her eighth appearance in Chicago’s first 10 games. An ankle injury cost her two games, and she has seen sporadic minutes when available. That said, she made a strong bid for a bigger role with this latest showing.
Riding off that performance, Van Lith made a request to fans before Tuesday’s game against the Mystics.

“Sky Town, see you Tuesday. Come out, we need y’all,” she stated. “We’re pumped. We’re coming off a win, so we need y’all to have that energy. Love you guys.”
Chicago is heading home after a three-game road trip, hence Van Lith’s request for fans to come out and support.
Following a slow start to her professional career, Van Lith has quickly made her mark since being selected 11th overall in the 2025 WNBA Draft. A standout at Louisville, LSU, and TCU—where she averaged 11.6 points and 3.6 assists as a senior en route to her team’s Elite 8 appearance—Van Lith is now translating her abilities to the pro level.

Before Sunday’s game, Van Lith had been averaging just 3.7 points and 1.0 rebounds per contest through seven career appearances. Sunday was also her first game scoring in double figures in the WNBA.
